Every now an then an old Randall shows up on e-bay looking like a piece of coal:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200374486699&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

Yet sometimes there are telltale signs that there may be something shiny underneath that rough exterior. This is a case in point: No indication that the edge had been re-sharpened after it left the shop, sheath in excellent condition and a mint stone. Turns out the original owner had put a coat of varnish on the flawless ivory handle and the blade still had the original shop grease!

All that was required to expose the diamond was an application of finger nail polish remover to the handle and a wipedown of the blade.

Photos can be deceiving in both pleasant and unpleasant ways...........

Best,

Ron, that is beautiful!

Did the shop refinish the blade? The nick on the blade just in front of the choil seems to be gone.

Thanks, Tom. No. the nick is still there. Just hard to see in my photo. It doesn't bother me much. None of us are perfect either

Ron,
That is great ... the knife AND the story!
Did you know about the varnish before you bid on it?

Ron:

Great find. I watched this knife on E-Bay and figured you had it in your sights.

That is one great Randall!

So much for "don't remove the patina".

Thanks Tony (and everyone). Good question. I was pretty sure it was ivory (Too early for Ivorite), but I thought the yellow color was just part of it ageing. It was obvious that wasn't the case when I got it in hand as there were chips out of the varnish. The blade condition exceeded my expectations as well. Pleasant surprises that don't happen that often.

Ron, I'm glad it went to an RKS member. I was the high bidder on that knife for awhile. My only concern was the nick in the blade. Glad it cleaned up as well as it did, even with the nick it's still a beauty!
