From Randall Made Knives: The History of the Man the the Blades, by Robert L. Gaddis, pp. 112-116

Quote:

The little Trout and Bird Knife, with its 3 3/4- to 4-inch blade length and sharp top cutting edge, was the inspiration of Litch Steinman. The germ for the idea can be traced back to his days in fishing camps in the woods of northern Michigan and Canada, during the mid-1930s, many of which he shared with his good friend Bo Randall. The Randall and Steinman families were longtime friends, and Bo and Litch spent many, many days together fishing small trout streams or hunting grouse with their dogs. It isn't at all surprising that a special knife just for trout and bird cleaning was developed by these two sportsmen.

...[After one such trip in 1946] When the Randall family returned to Orlando late that August, Bo got to work on a knife to answer Litch's design requirements. The 4-inch blade was given a nice curved cutting edge, like the front portion of a Hunter, and the top edge was sharpened more than 2 inches back from the tip. A small version of the Carving Knife hilt was fitted ahead of a stag handle, without butt cap, and the butt was rounded off similar to the Carver. Naturally there was a generous cutout ahead of the hilt for one's index finger or the bail of a tea kettle. This prototype was noted in the journal books on 1 September 1946 as '#8--Super Trout.'

...This little knife turned out so well that Bo decided to make it part of the Randall line. ...The Randall catalog was only a year old and didn't need revising for just this one new knife. Thus the Trout and Bird Knife [as it was now called] was introduced to the nine most important dealers by sending a complimentary knife to a key contact at each store.

From the current catalog:
Quote:

Model 8 "Trout and Bird Knife" -- 4" blade of 3/16" stock. Top cutting edge sharpened approximately 2 inches. 4 3/8" - 5/8" stag handle. Brass hilt. Especially suited for small fish and feathered game. Historical note: Francis G. Powers, U-2 pilot was carrying a Model 8 when he was shot down over Russia in May, 1960.

Regarding Francis G. Powers, I have sent numerous letters to the Russian embassy inquiring about the possibility of the knife being returned to Randall Made Knives. I have yet to hear back from them. But I will continue to persevere as the Cold War is long over. And if Mr. Gorbachev could be chided into the monumental task of tearing down that wall by President Ronald Reagan, a lover of Randall knives, maybe Mr. Putin could pop that old Model 8 into a UPS box and ship it to Orlando. (I know you're reading this, sir. Mr. Putin, please send that knife back.)

My friend Dale Dorris, Cabinet Man, has a nice collection of Model 8s that I know he will share with us. I am looking forward to seeing them. Lady and gentlemen, may we please see some Model 8s.

My favorite Model 8 that I bought in Colorado about twenty years ago. I was told it was made in 1947.

Rhett, can you tell if the reduced hilt is pure silver?

It should be.

I no longer own this one, but it is a little different. The handle is Alternate Ivory. Note the A/I etch behind the trademark stamp. Brass furniture with red & white spacers.

This pinned ivory example came up on e-bay a year and a half or so ago. The blade grind closely matched that of a photo in Mr. Gaddis' book of the original Trout and Bird shipped to Litch Steinman on October 26th, 1946. The blade was name etched to a Mr. "Fred M. Gilman" who reportedly owned a sporting goods store at Walloon Lake and carried a line of Bo's knives. Mr. Gaddis was kind enough to do some research on the knife and his letter follows. When I received the knife I was surprise to discover that the blade was made out from 1/8th inch stock! A friend of mine picked up a virtually identical knife at this year's Blade Show (also named etched and documented as one of the 1st group made) which was also made out of this same stock. I don't know when Bo converted to 3/16th stock but I suspect it happened fairly quickly (Comparative photo courtesy of Rhett).

This one is a mid 50's pinned stag T&B that came up on e-bay about 4-5 years ago. The auction had one very bad small photo and all you could really tell was that the sheath had a brown button. I asked the seller for better pics and he sent a close up of the blade which looked pretty rough. I put in a bid representative of what I figured the condition warranted and I ended up winning it. I tell people that when you buy an old Randall off of e-bay there are always surprises no matter how good or bad the discription or photos are. Some disappointing and some exciting. In this case I opened the package and found the knife to be dead mint! The guy had mistakenly send me a photo of a different knife

I too like the feel and weight of the model 8-4's. Here's a picture of mine. It was the second Randall that I purchased. I really like the patina and feel of the stag on this knie. Not sure when it was made, early 60's to early 70's?
Thanks

Dubie,

Yes it is silver. I bought this knife the same day with original drawing of this knife to Bo Randall. Silver hilt also.

Rex,
I have never noticed this before myself, but I think that is your favorite 8 because it resembles a Stanback Spec. blade design. It is a beatiful knife that you have there. I've got one in the old style ordered, but will wait a while yet on it to arrive.

I think Rex's knife resembles a miniture Little Bear Bowie
(Baby Bear?)

Here are my two.
The top one is stainless with thumb notches and compasss
The other is an A G Russell with golden maple burl.
Both blades are of exactly the same length but the stag one is 3/16" deeper.

Here's an interesting old 8 in my collection. The sheath has dazzled me for a while to its origin/maker. I believe it is a Johnson sheath made at the transiton period between Heiser and Johnson. No stamp and an extra wide belt loop. Any thoughts?

Tom,

That is an unusual sheath...... no stamp, and it's essentially a smooth back.

I'll be interested in any other comments others have.

Patrick,
If I'm not mistaken, I believe that one was a color scene done by Gary Harbour on white micarta. It's been a while since I've seen it, but I have a pic saved in a folder.

Here are two that I own. With only one more, old style, due from the shop,I suddenly feel inadequate with Dr.Dale's knives on display.

I was fortunate enough to receive this knife today.
It's a nice example of an old style RMK 8.
I like the lines of this knife very much.

Look what the postman brought today! This is a very sweet knife. I think I like the old Model 8 better than the new model.

That's no doubt a double stamp. I like the way that handle necks down in the spacer area. Very nice!

Thanks Tom. This trout was caught on the White river in Arkansas. My company takes a trip there every year. A co-worker snapped this shot, and didn't e-mail it to me till two days after my home computer crashed. So special thanks to TTB for posting it for me. And yes, that was great smoked trout! Hard to get lit, but great!

This one "came home" within the past week. I parted with it one time. I'm glad to have it back. It's a "dressed" (or polished) stag #8-4" with all "blue" spacers. These options are no longer available.

Cap, Funny you should post one that came back around... the A/I knife Burnie posted was one I had and sold probably 5 or 6 years ago... I saw it on Burnie's table at Blade... then found the pictures on my computer.

There are several knives I'd like to get back.....hmmmmm.

Cool Model 8! How did you ever let that knife go in the first place?? Finely dressed handle on that knife too, I'm certain the spacers look great with the grain in that stag.

Here's the other knife I got from Dale. A great #8 with brass and black spacers and leather wrist thong Dale put on. The stag is great and feels real good in the hand. Great knife and another great deal with Dale.

Nice "8's" fellows. An 8-4 is an excellent small game and trout knife, along with squirrels, rabbits, and even a camp knife.

Thanks Guys! I can't stop handling this one!
Tom, yes I took the photo.
I used my favorite for grilling ... natural lump charcoal...
it fit the bill for the "black on black" theme I had in mind.
I just poured a pile in my outdoor fire pit, placed in shade, just a foot or two from the sunlight.
The blade still came out "hot" (very white on the top and bottom bevels) but I think it contrasts
nicely with all the black tones.

Super knife, Tony! I just returned from an "all-afternoon" trip to Orlando for a Dr. visit. This was a nice post to come back to....along with a nice "New York" surprise in my mail!!
Thanks, Gumba! Best, Capt. Chris

Here's one of my 8s. Was posted in another thread some time ago...but, for the newcomers:

Handle material is elephant ivory from David Warther, Scrimshaw is by Rick Bowles. Hilt is nickel silver, butt cap is aluminum.

Doug

Man, there are some beautiful #8's on this thread and my pictures don't do this one justice. But, the more often I carry and use this one the more I like it. I know it's the Old Style Trout and Bird but it' also great for field dressing whitetails and turkeys.

I'll be honest...I have never been "into" #8's...and not really "into" carbon steel...and I should also add that I'm not really "into" brass furniture. But, this one changed my mind.

My #8 is my knife of choice when I go fishing. The sharpened top blade is perfect for de-heading trout just before they go into the frying pan.

Okay. Yes, it has been a good week. I actually got this a day before the 5-4 arrived. I really love this one as well. This may actually be more of a user than the 5-4 due to the fact it is stainless and I practically live in the rain forest here in upstate NY. Rain constantly and lots of humidity.

Seller had it as being a brass guard, but, I was very pleasantly surprised when it arrive and is NS.

Not sure if this has ever been broached before, but, how many of you actually use the top edge?

Thanks for looking,
Tom

I am a member and forgot my number. Earlier in the week I emailed Rhett asking him what it was so I could add it to my signature, but I have not heard back yet. My stack of newsletters was damaged by flood water two weeks ago and my wife tossed my most recent copy, not damaged, so I don't have it as a reference.

So, this is my first Randall and first post. I'm pretty excited about it and I believe it will be an excellent fishing knife. I hope the SS holds up to the salt water here in FL.

I managed to get a hold of my second model 8. Nice older classic lines of this knife. I'm guessing early fifties basing mainly on the spacer configuration, pinned stag and older style Heiser stamp. A little unusual double red bottom and top spacer. Faintly line between the combined red spacers. I'm pretty sure the hilt is NS though it is a lighter shade, so.........? I'll guess I will never see a Heiser stamped model 8-7. smile

The sheath stamping, Tony. Actually:I think Heiser stamped them this way because they could be used for a #8 or the short version of the Model #7. Just a theory?

Is old style grind an extra option or not???

It is "not" a chargeable option. The knife, with a stag handle and the old style grind, is available (non-catalog 11-N) at a listed price for 2011 of $340.00. Other options are charged accordingly. Hope this helps...

I picked up a pretty neat Model 8 recently. Rick informed me that it was one of the 1st 10 Model 8's that he scrimmed for the shop in 1981. Several unusual features aside from the scrim itself:

1. 4 & 5/8" blade (Sheath is marked 8-4.5). Essentially the same grind as a Model 23 or a large Stanaback Special. The only difference being that it was ground from 3/16th inch stock.

2. Black and white spacers typical of a very early Bowles scrim or a Leshhorn knife.

3. An Old Yeller handle made from two laminated sheets of Westinghouse paper Micarta.

Hope you enjoy.

Best,

Ron

Great knife Rex! I really like the brass/orange combo... That would be a popular knife in upstate South Carolina, a good Clemson orange!

Great knife, Rex! I do love my old user #8 ( old style). The size and feel is just about perfect for my EDC and field dressing bucks and gobblers. Know anything about Big Orange in your part of the country? And will VT ever play UT in Bristol? Oooppps! Off topic!

Hey guys. I'm new here and this is a GREAT thread!

Here's my model 8. It's strictly a user. Collectors look away if you don't want to see any wear. It's relatively new - only cleaned a few trout and it's still waiting on its first whitetail.

Here she is:

Thanks Tony. Here's the other side. I know it has been said by so many Randall owners that it's a cliché but the stag seriously feels like it was made to fit MY hand.

Thought I'd add my latest Model #8-4" Trout & Bird to the 'Knife of the Week' thread.

I'm hoping this one dates to the late 60's early 70's era. grin

Well,
THAT'S a real beauty! What IS that handle material?

As for the photo, I may be in the minority but I think the photos, especially the first one is great!
I feel the directional light and resulting shadow brings a real drama to the shot.
Much more powerful than a flatter, overall lighting look.
And the blue cast of the background is really nice ... makes both the blade and the handle "pop".

Jim, & Steve thanks!!
Funny, I bought a crock sheath for it a few years ago....forgot it was going to be a reduced hilt, so it will not fit the sheath correctly. Guess I'll just have to order another, and wait another 5 years....Wonder if I can get a squared hilt and finger groves...better ask the capt.

Anyone out there know the approximate age of this knife? I really like the wide spacers that were used. Are they black or blue? I have a touch of the color blindness. Thanks.

When I was a fishing guide in and around Yellowstone Park, I packed my #8 every day and used it every day. No telling how many trout I cleaned with it. My only complaint is the need for a pouch sheath as the keeper strap is always facing towards "stuff" that unsnaps the keeper. I finalyy took my #8 with me to the shop one year and had an extra keeper around the hanbdle with the snap facing the opposite direction. That seemed to help but it's still a pain to try and get the knife back into the sheath and get it all snapped up when a pouch sheath is just so easy. You will love the #8 as it is light and very handy.

Tony and all of You guys, thank you for your proverbial courtesy!
Mike, the one on the keeper strap is a very interesting observation, I'll get a pouch sheath, although not through the Shop.

Pap--

Agree with your comment about the keeper strap facing forward on the single-hilt knives, and the tendency for it to catch and unsnap and also getting bumped accidentally with the hand or arm and coming unsnapped. It is not easy to come up with an alternative keeper strap of this type on a single hilt knife--although it could help to simply wear a right-hand sheath on the left side, thereby making the tag end of the strap face to the rear. But that might seem awkward to some of us in terms of extracting and re-inserting the knife.

I called the Capt. yesterday asking he knew whether a Model F pouch style sheath from the catalog without a stone pouch might be had for one of my knives (but I would actually like such a sheath for some other knives as well). No luck, although I suspect I could talk some of the sheath makers into doing one for me--It would not be an RMK "package" but would satisfy my preference on how to carry some of these knives.

Hey Guys,

It's been a little while since I bought a new Randall... had a lot of fun putting the options together for this 8-4X and ordering through CCS. Thrilled with the way it turned out! It's a fancy fishing knife, here are the specs:

- Stainless blade
- Golden Box Elder handle
- Brass Scalloped Collar
- Brass Scalloped Coolie Cap

Hope yall like it - have a great week,

Jay

Stainless blade nickel silver guard and drilled for thong.I used to think the old style grind was better suited for fish and small game. But the top edge on this style is great for cutting heads and legs off.The angle of it keeps your knuckles off the cutting surface like a good kitchen knife does.

No Brook trout but last fall it took the wings off of a bunch of doves that were breasted. The way the top edge is angled made it easy to use a downed tree as a cutting board and no worries about knuckle clearance. The point made removing the #7 1/2 shot from the meat.It also impressed our host Ethan Becker of Becker knives and patrol pack fame as well as the editor of The Joy Of Cooking and Cordon Bleau trained chef.He had to break out his mint stag handled model 1 and Gaurdian Randalls.

By far, my favorite Randall Model.....the good old bird/trout.

Top knife: My oldest.....etched on the other side "USMC" along with name and military ID#. Also, a nice old compass to boot.

2nd from top: The favorite out of my entire collection of RMKs. Check out the "pale" Westinghouse.....this one hasn't seen much sun in it's lifetime. Also, nice white compass.

Middle knife: My very first Randall.....thought it deserved a nameplate. This knife has cost me a small fortune as it has spawned numerous other RMKs.....I'm still an addict and no end in sight.

2nd from bottom: A Mini-Stanaback Special.....bet you haven't seen many of these.

Bottom knife: Old style with NICE stag and buttplate.

Doug,
Nice set of knives..."BUT"...(There's that word again)...the leather knife is not one of my Stanaback Specials. It is not seen often, that much is for sure, but it is a Model #8, Trout-N-Bird, in leather. Stanaback Specials have a "BCP" (Bowie Clip Point).
Hope this helps, Capt. Chris
PS: Here's the only quick pics I have of a 4" leather...and the stock is 1/4", verses 3/16" on a Model #8-4"...CCS

Kenneth P. Kirchman was known as the quintessential "Florida Cracker." He graduated from Stetson University in central Florida with a BS in mathmatics and then earned a business degree from Harvard. After graduation in 1968, he started "Florida Software" in Altamonte Springs on a shoestring and subsequently built it into the world's premier banking software company which was re-named Kirchman Corporation. He had money and wasn't afraid to spend it: He hired only the best. He bought the 10,000 acre "Lake X" (AKA Lake Conlon) from Mercury Marine for use as an offsite recreational area for his employees Lake X was about 30 miles outside of Orlando and the secret testing grounds for Mercury Marine's latest technology for 47 years. He had his own private jet and drove a Rolls Royce. He was an avid outdoorsman and participated regularly in international recreational shooting sports in Argentina, Denmark, England, Ireland, Scotland and Spain.

Deanna Pitman was ambitious, pretty, talented and the daughter of one of Ken's best friends. After she won the title of Miss Apopka in 1979, Ken and his friend decided to put Ken's son and Deanna together on a date to see if there was any chemistry. There wasn't, but a May-December romance started up between Deanna and Ken who had been previously divorced. Deanna took the Miss Florida title in 1982, but a serious bid to secure a Miss America title that year was dashed when she flirted with a DUI charge that made the papers that year. At the time, Ken was 47 and Deanna 22. Ken and Deanna were subsequently married for 25 years. Ken passed in 2007 at the age of 72.

After buying Lake X, Ken developed a yen for Mercury boats and engines. At the time of his passing, he had a large collection which was subsequently auctioned off. A local Florida marine salvage company bought the bulk of it. Last year that company put the following knife up on e-bay which I bought. I knew it had a Bowles scrim, but I didn't know it was name etched to Miss Florida 1982 until I had it in hand.

The knife is very similar to the first 10 Model 8's that Rick scrimmed for the shop in 1981. (Earlier last year I picked one of these up - here's a link to it on the Model 8 thread http://www.knifetalkforums.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=31377&page=16. These were unique in that they had a blade length of 4 1/2". An additional 1/2" doesn't sound like much, but it literally transforms a Model 8 into a Model 23 or large Stanaback Special (Blade thickness aside). The only difference in this case is that the Miss Florida knife has red and white spacers vs. black and white on the first 10, and the first 10 scrim serial numbers were the 40's while the Miss Florida knife is serial numbered 076, which puts it late '81 or early '82.

Got this in the recent past I received this one. Did not realize it had a Nickle silver hilt when I bought it. Pictures were not too clear. After tweaking the edge a little, I decided it needed to be put to use. I've used it on a couple squirrels, in the kitchen and to carve this.

Talented woodcarvers seem to be a thing of the past. Absolutely beautiful work on the wood. Could you post a photo of just the wood work?

A friend of mine gave me a two foot length of wood "chain" carved from one piece of wood.

I hope you will become a regular with your artistic woodwork complementing a terrific example of fine metalwork.

Many of us applaud intricate workmanship whether in wood or metal.

Please show anything else you might have crafted, accompanied by your Randall.

Gorgeous stag on that Randall of yours.

Tom, that's a beautiful knife there - and an outstanding carving job, really impressive!

Ron, thank you very much for the interesting story of a very special knife. At first I thought it looked like a #5-5 blush
I like it a lot. In fact it would be the ideal knife to carry here because the legal length in Germany is 12cm ( = 4.724 inches) ...
But then again I wouldn't want to scratch the artwork wink

Wow, you are all too kind.

The I use Rough sawed pine that is scrap left over from the various barn building projects from a dairy farmer I know. Softer wood is the ticket. If it is too hard, you need to apply that much more pressure to cut, and when you inevitably slip, what would normally be a cut repaired with super glue and liquid bandage, turns into a solo drive to the emergency room to have yourself sewn back together.

Here is a shot of a shelf that has a bunch of my carvings. I don't carve anything you would recognize. Not one for carving animals or chains or "stuff". I like flowing shapes and making the piece delicate.

If you'd, I can take individual shots of the pieces, rather than the "group photo"

Thanks again for the nice comments,
Tom

P.S.
I'll take better shots of the knife as well. That is the best piece of stag I've ever had. Incredibly solid with hardly any marrow.

Really love my stag handled 8 in above posts, but stumbled upon this new one last week and fell in love. Maroon Micarta is my favorite handle material. Paired with brass and the fact this one was O1 made it a must have.

Immediately upon receiving, I knocked the top edge off and smoothed it out. Three reasons I do this, in order of importance:

1 & 2: I whittle and carve a lot. Having a top edge would make it more difficult to do the finer work, and I choke up a lot, so I'd exponentially increase the number of times I casually walk past the family on my way to the master bathroom to glue and patch myself back up.

2: New York is the birthplace of irrational behavior and has this thing about double edged knives. Yep, even a Ka-Bar with top edge sharpened is double edged. So, by taking off that edge, I leave no game warden or police officer any earthly reason to take possession of my Randall.

Thinned the pigeon herd at one of my local dairy farm permissions. I like to take the breast meat out of a few to feed my feral cats at home, who in turn, take care of all critters that may mess with my garden.

Thanks to Dan Snyder, now I have a great #8.
I like the brass butt cap.
Balance the blade slightly shifted to the handle,
for a small blade this is convenient, at least for me.

Very cool photos, desert. Thanks for posting them.

To anyone - what is the item with the ball chains in the bottom left corner of this photo?

Tom, unfortunately my friend and I do not know, museum staff also.
Maybe someone who served in the Air Force US or the CIA will help clarify what it is.
In my opinion, this keychain, true, a little strange.

Ha Tom you place too much faith in ole Ron! It isn't military issue whatever it is. However that said it appears, to me at least, to be some type of watch fob.
Btw Tom I'll let you in on a secret that John Gibson and I know. In a few days, Feb. 26-March 1, is the OVMS (Ohio Valley Military Society) annual Show of Shows Militaria Show. 2000 tables of some of the neatest stuff you will ever see and most of it will be for sale. The thing is there are lots of old Randall's there. Specifically military Randall's. Many documented knives. Also if you like the SOG knives there will be a lot of those there. You are not that far from Louisville so you ought to work in a trip. I purchased my Tenite 15 there many years ago now. I do see a couple of fellows at this show that I see at the Blade Show. So it really isn't that big of a secret. Anyway think about it.

I believe Ronnie may be correct regarding the chain. If you do a "3-strand pocket watch chain" search, the first image that comes up is quite similar...

Ronnie,

Thanks for the information on the military show. Sounds like a neat event. I'll keep it in mind.

Ronnie and Bob,

I'm not so sure that chain is for a pocket watch. Those large clips don't look like they would accommodate a watch in anyway. They look very specific for something.

I thought about that old guy. Cause those clips look like they clip onto a round knob of sorts. Maybe something clipped on then had to be removed to activate the knob. Or it's a watch fob of sorts......

I picked up this little "number" at the Fayetteville Gun Show a few weeks ago.

Westinghouse "Old Yeller" ivory Micarta scrimshawed by Bruce Paxton in 1987. Stainless steel, nickel-silver hilt, duraluminum crows-beak butt cap.

I just received a new (oldie) Model #8...OLD STYLE. (Thanks Burnie). I also received today a new "L" series Canon lens for my Canon 5D Mk.II.
So, I figured, why not take a couple of photos of my new (old) Randall with my new lens?
Hope you like it.
Stay sharp, Capt. Chris

Would that be the Canon 100mm f/2.8 L macro lens?

I' m using the 100mm f/2.8 macro macro lens, one step down from the "L" series.

Just curious.

Nice stag and sheath.

Capt Chris,

It's a little amazing how much a one stop difference can make. Going from an f/4 to an f/2.8 can add a thousand dollars to the price tag.

My 70-200mm L is an f/4.

I need to post my little 8-4" with ivory micarta ("Old Yeller")
& crow's beak butt cap, scrimshawed by Bruce Paxton in '87.

Almost five weeks and counting for "Hotlanta".

I think that a production 1971 year.
So it was written in the old Sheath.
New sheath from the manufacturer,
which me was advised in this forum +
grinding pocket stone from the collection Rhett Stidham,
I took on ebay, perhaps from another RMK.

The knife is very handy. Steel viscous, sharpen easily,
very nice cut meat and vegetables. Blade began to darken.

The only negative - the balance of the knife strongly shifted
towards the handle (is to blame brass butt cap + lightweight blade).
The next order I will try to do little knife with lightweight handle
(no Brass or NS butt cap, only stag, wood or micarta).

True and true! But I just wanted to post this knife under that title. Although this isn't "old" brown micarta from the 60's, it is quite a looker anyhow!

Bill -

go to the site and click on "The Randall Collector" at the bar on the top of the page. It will open that section and there are four pages of articles. I think it is on the second or third page.

When i updated the site a few months ago the chronological order from the old site got screwed by my web guy as well as the dates. I have not figured out how to correct it nor taken the time to attempt it as of yet.

Also I was asked about 3 thick 2 thin spacer arrangements on model 8's and other small knives even though this was still 7 spacer time. I wrote about this years ago and again to the best that I can tell, it is not uncommon to find these smaller knives from the later 60's to have this spacer arrangement on non-leather handles, particularly stag and ivory it seems. It also seems to be reserved for 3/16" bladed knives.

I don't think it was earlier than say 1967-68 or so. I don't recall offhand seeing a documented piece from any earlier with the 3 thick 2 thin.

I also stumbled across another one of your rmkcollector pages that was quite different than what I normally see. It had the old brown micarta knives shown on it. A true thing of beauty!

I actually paid extra to have a micarta handle instead of tenite on my first Model 14. I didn't like the detachable tenite handle, and bought my brown micarta Model 14 as soon as the epoxied micarta handle option appeared in the Randall catalog. (Maybe the cheaper tenite would have more value today than the micarta?)

Thanks, Bill and Wally.

Sad story, Wally.

When I went on inactive duty after two Vietnam tours, I stored the knife in its sheath along with my uniforms. The crate was forgotten in my cellar, stored on the floor. We had continuous dampness and some mild flooding. The uniforms rotted, and the sheath got terribly moldy. I discarded the whole mess, keeping only the knife and some medals. (Thinking back now, maybe I should have kept the sheath, despite its terrible condition.) I had to clean the knife, of course, but was VERY glad it had that “S” signifying stainless steel!

Years ago, I had Greg make me the upper sheath with large copper rivets. Later, I was able to buy the lower sheath from Perry. However, I can’t remember whether my knife originally came with a small rivet sheath, and don't know if it is absolutely correct.

I really don't think so. I don't recall ever seeing a brown micarta 14 or 15 in anything but a sheath with large harness rivets. If it was black micarta, possible.

You have three things going against you:

brown micarta
filled screw hole
low "S"

Max, I have not used special tools.
I just cook the vegetables, cut melon.
Perhaps the acid in vegetables all done,
the blade is standard polished from the store smile

thanks Tune, that lead me to two more threads, lots of great info. Capt Chris's recipe makes you want to lick the blade.

I got it now. Nothing you do is wrong. just pickle it.

Good deal Max.

This is a good time to remind everyone of this search method which I used to find this old thread. The forum's search box is limited..... in my opinion.

Try this when you need info on any web site or forum:

The sheath is marked 8 4 S the "S" designates it to be special.
Finger grips are not normally available as an option for the Model 8.

I'm in no way qualified to say, but the knife sure looks newer than the sheath. Is it just me? How about a shot of the front of the sheath?

The #84"S" was used, from time-to-time but not the norm. I, also, would have to see the front. Sometimes a handle-wrapped keeper strap was requested. The finger grips had nothing to do with it. Johnson roughbacks were the standard sheath provider even when finger grips were still being offered on 3/16" knives. The elimination of providing finger grips on smaller stock took place well after Sullivans was the sole supplier of Randall's sheaths.
Best, Capt. Chris

A "diagonal" keeper strap would have been stamped, simple 84. The "handle-wrapped" keeper predicated the "S". Nice knife and sheath combination.
Best, Capt. Chris
PS: The normal sheath that would have been given this knife...

My apologies for the photos above. I guess I am going to have to play with my white balance. The knife, along with the sheath, is no longer available. It has:
* Dressed stag
* All blue spacers (They look black in the photo)
I think both knives are late 1980's. (At least I know that mine is)...Here's older photos, showing the blue spacers better.

I picked this beauty up from Captain Chris a couple weeks ago. I was dumb enough to pass on it at the Orlando show in March and I was shocked and pleased to find out he STILL had it!
#8 New Style, Stainless,NS1, Thumb notches, Aluminum Spacers, Nickel Butt plate, and a really fantastic piece of stag that Chris supplied.
I have been running around with it for a couple weeks and it carries perfect!! Thank you Captain Chris, it's actually my favorite Randall that I own.

I received this Model 8-4" from a widow, whose late husband was a friend of mine. I am helping to appraise her late husband's military & sporting gun collection, over 300+.

A friend of mine, who is a military collector appraised the WWI & WWII pieces and I appraised the sporting longguns and handguns. Never saw a dozen each, 03-A4's, Colt O.M.M. revolvers, & M1922 rifles in the same collection. Mind boggling, just looking at all the "Snake" guns from Colt.

We cannot find the Randall sheath that would be with it. The knife was scrimshawed by Rick Bowles, probably in the '80's. The signature block indicates "RB208".

Maybe we'll find the sheath when I do an extensive search through the box of Pumas, Bokers, and other Randalls.

The collection is anyone's dream find, especially the Model 8-4", since it was a gift of gratitude.

Just picked this one up. Doesn't have the correct sheath, however after I do the research I'll see about finding the correct one.

Nice seven spacers

feels good in the hand, thick stag handle.

Well Bill, that looks like mine. I bet they are the same time period. I have a late 60's sheath but it is a 8-4S and won't fix the knife, to short. what year is your?

Nice knife you have there Bill.

You must have a sheath that fits the old grind Model 8.

Here is a custom 8-4X sitting in one of the safes.

do you know the year they changed from the old style grind to the current grind like yours and mine? I think I need a Maurice Johnson rough back to match the knife.

Max, the 1962 catalog shows the old grind and the 1963 shows the new..... so there abouts.

Powers was carrying and old style in 60 when he was shot down..... I do remember that.

thanks Tune,

I have always wondered about that and never thought to ask.

I'll write that down in my Randall log book. I try to keep track of this type of information.

Very nice indeed - do you guys that are fortunate enough to have the fossil handles need to treat them with mineral oil or do they need it?

Treat them the same as you would ivory if you live in a seasonal climate. Yes mineral oil helps but so does having a humidity control of some sort.

Interestingly, I watched as usual ebay and found this lot. Inside there is a very interesting photo.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/282429992923

In the Russian Museum he is not.
I wrote letters to them and called them.
They do not know where the knife.

And here is his mark!
Apparently, he is at the master Greg Wall or his friend.
Photos are fresh. The knife is clearly in the USA. It's good.

I think we should try to contact him and organize a photo session

Greg Wall....$575 for a knock off. He should stick to his usual $300.00.

Just my opinion.

Eric, the point it's not the price of Greg's work.
The point is in the whereabouts, where is location
of real knife Gary Powers smile

It is necessary to find it and photograph it for history,
as Captain Chris did photo Westmoreland Randall.

About the price, I almost agree with you, for 50
I would have taken it, But this is my personal opinion))
My friend does better, I will place his work in the section
of fixed knives

Everything is fine smile
I myself explained a little chaotically.

I thought that Gary knife was lost. It happens that museum workers
steal exhibits, or a knife could be taken by someone else who has
power, for himself. Nobody knew where he was. And then he pops
up in pictures on ebay. After so many years!

Everything is clear, I did not inattentively read the description.
This is Gary Powers second opener. The knife is with his son.

Hence the search for the original should continue in the museum's storerooms.

Nice one Max,I like those old 8's, good find ! You can always give Gary Clinton a call, he may have a correct sheath for that, he doesn't always put all he has on his site, I have scored a couple vintage sheaths like that in the past with him.

received the Model 8 yesterday, and it is very nice. NS hilt, the spacers are very nice and tight. the stag isn't narly but very nice with the original finish. the blade is excellent. As Tune has stated the sheath is 60's or 70's, but very good. I am looking for the correct sheath, HH Hieser brown button sheath. If anyone has one they are willing to part with please email me.

thanks max

Here are a couple of Model 8's. First a more recent (70's ?) with gorgeous stag, and second a 40's vintage with beautiful pinned stag. This knife was listed in the Crider "Green Catalog".

Wow James! What a beautiful, useful Randall to own and declare your EDC. I've loved, used, enjoyed and carried my #8, old-style, stag knife on more hiking, fishing & hunting trips than any other Randall I own. Excellent choice & outstanding knife. Use & enjoy.

This model 8 was first posted here by Burnie Austin, and has found it's way around to me. A knife exactly like this was my introduction to Randall knives. A hunting buddy of mine had been given a pinned ivory model 8, that was later confirmed by Mr. Gaddis to be one the first several made. I couldn't afford the knife at the time, so I sold it for him, and regretted it ever since. And when this one recently came up for sale, I just had to have it. An amazing piece of Randall history, and I'm very proud to own it.

A couple of months ago I took a Model 15 back to the shop to have them add a wrist thong hole to it. While they were at it, I had them add one to my Model 8:

Just got a model 8 with a few adds and CAPTAIN was right that it fits a PATHFINER sheath perfect and even better in an old style PATHFINDER sheath.
The included sheath threw me for a loop at first but thanks to Larry W he caught it. THX

My Model 8-4" was a gift from the widow, whose husband left her with 300+ military firearms collection, including '03, '03-A3, & '03-A4's (75 of all those). I spent two days at the house, cataloging and appraising the collection, plus six each of each of the Colt "Snakes", all of which came to about a "quarter mil".

Knowing I liked Randalls, she presented it to me. The scrimshaw work was done by a well-known artist in VA.

It has become my favorite carry-knife.

It was a "Big Day!" for me this morning as the UPS man brought my new Model 8-4" Old Style thanks to Gary Clinton. Photos still in the shop wrapper. Resin Ivory S, stainless blade, thumb notches, reduced nickel silver hilt, wrist thong and tear drop shaped handle. Love it!
