Thanks to all who have posted thus far. From Randall Made Knives: The History of the Man and the Blades by Robert L. Gaddis In 1954 Bo received a letter from two U.S. Marine Corps officers interested in developing a pilot's survival knife. More detail on this will be forthcoming next week, but from this process the Model 14 was also developed. The original plan was to have the knives mass-produced for the Marine Corp. Because of red tape and changes in personnel assigned to the project, that never happened. "Bo didn't have the time, money, or patience to mount a lobbying effort, so he just added these knives to the Randall line as Models 14 and 15 and kept on making top-quality knives for those who appreciated them." (p. 150) The Vietnam War vastly increased the demand for Randall knives. Quote:
From February through July 1965, there was a significant, but manageable, increase in the orders. Then, in August, the avalanche started! That month saw many thousands of U.S. military men going to South Vietnam, as it suddenly became an American war. The demand for good knives skyrocketed, and individual orders received at Randall Made Knives more than doubled, compared to those of only the previous February. This wave of new orders was led by good ol' Model 1 All-Purpose Fighting Knife, followed by the Model 14 Attack, while in third place was the newest addition to the line, the Model 18 Attack-Survival.
...During January 1966, the Model 14's popularity overtook that of the Model 1, ushering in an entirely new ranking of model preference with U.S. military men. Throughout the remainder of the Vietnam War, the Model 14 Attack was a runaway leader in individual GI orders, with the Model 18 survival knife in second place.... (p. 206)
In the current RMK catalog, the Model 14 comes with either a Black or Green Micarta handle, "This knife was designed to meet the demand for an almost indestructible all-purpose knife, though it is especially suited for combat and survival purposes." I'm sure anyone who has handled a Model 14 with its 7 1/2" blade of 1/4" stock would readily agree.
Lady and gentlemen, may we please see some Model 14s? Kevin #5109

Here's a Model 14 that has been posted before. It was this year's Christmas knife. This is an example of a 14 after Silver Knife got his extremely talented hands on it. Once again, well done, Doug. Kevin

This Model 14 came in last week. It will be one of this year's Christmas knives. It's a beautiful example of Randall craftsmanship. Fantastic carbon blade, nickel silver double hilt, green micarta handle. Kevin

The model #14 has been one of my favorites ever since they became available with a cut down tang in the mid eighties. This model #14 CDT is (in my opinion) the finest I've ever seen. The ivory is perfect and, like the nickel silver furniture, has been heavily carved in deep relief by Tom Leschorn.

This model #14 has ALL the bells and whistles from the mid-sixties as well as provanance from both Vietnam and Afganistan which make it one of the most desireable vintage model #14s I've seen.

Tom, no, you are not out of your league with your 14. IMO it's one of the nicest 14's I've seen. Just love stag handles, especially with finger grooves. Dan Snyder #5537

Guido, awesome! For those of you unsure of what we're talking about; while there are plenty of aftermarket Parkerized RMK's floating around these days, there are exactly two that were made and documented as being sold through the Randall Shop - Rhett cared for them for awhile, now Guido is looking after them...very cool stuff!

Mike,
I don't know about the nicest Randall; that's a fairly broad statement but it is certainly one of the nicest stag handled knives from the shop in any model. Thanks for your comments.

For me this was an absolute must have knife from this years Blade Show in Atlanta. Everyone who saw this knife was very impressed with the massive, gnarly stag handle and the engraving. The Gutcher Rattlesnake sheath ain't bad either! Burnie can vouch for me on this one he was there when I bought it from Aggiemike. It is awesome, I just hope the photos do this knife the justice it deserves.
Best, Warren
Love this knife..its one of my favorite to look at, from Blade!! Cant wait for the Randal video to be done..Your finds made the video.

You did exceptionally well at The Blade Show Warren!!!!!! What a great knife. This one is the whole package. Blade, stag, butt plate, and engraving. The craftsman at RMK did a magnificent job on that butt plate!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for taking the time to post.

My very first Randall arrived today Well sort of I ordered this one from the shop 5 years ago and paid the deposit. At the time I had no other Randall knives. I actually got to handle this knife last month at the shop it had not had it's final polish at the time.

Guess I didn't post this one in Knife of the Week Received this one 5 - 6 months ago. Capt. Chris & Scott suggested this configuration. The Model #22 handle is kind-of-like getting 6 options for 5. SS Blade (1 option) Brass FCH (1 option) Black & Brass Spacers (1 option) This leaves 2 options for Custom Handle Material, Brass Butt Cap and Handle Shape With the #22 handle you get Shop Micarta and choice of color, Crows Beak Butt Cap and The #22 Handle Shape for your 2 remaining options.

Thanks Dubie,
This Model #14 with this configuration feels great in your hand, it is extremely well balanced with the big chunk of brass on the butt end.
I never thought about it until I was talking to Scott at one of the Orlando Gun & Knife Shows but the SS Blades are noticeably heavier than the Carbon Blades. Depending on the handle type and material a #14 in 01 Steel could be well balanced but a little blade heavy in SS with the same handle, especially in the CDT version. This one is near perfect. The #14 blade is a hefty blade.

Hi Fabio. I gave my wife the Mini 14 for bag carry. The fullsize one's handle looked kinda obvious sticking out of her purse. Like Tony said, you had better be a good boy and keep her happy. Ciao

I thought I'd better show this one off here finally. Purchased originally from a dealer in this NFG style in the early 70s by the original owner. The dealer was in Virginia. I have a couple of 14s with NFGs and have it from the shop that this was an option open to dealers though seldom sought as it defeated the purpose of FGs on the 14 - namely superior grip on blooded hand and wasn't encouraged. The ones I have are dated probably within 6-12 months of each other. 1 with gold cords and 1 with OD, both with SP stones. The smooth handle is flawless with perfect lines and symmetry. Hope you enjoy viewing one of my prized ones.
If anyone has recollection of a dealer in Virginia I'd be happy to be enlightened.
Cheers

Kevin, Here is my Model #14 "Attack"...not the usual 7-1/2" blade but one with a 6-1/2" blade. Here's the story:
"This RKS newsletter article is from the June 1995 RKS newsletter #27. The model #14 Attack has become a mainstay in the Randall lineup. The 7-1/2" full tang knife was designed with military usage in mind from the start. After the design was submitted to the military boards, the Air Force requested the same knife, only with a 5-1/2" blade. Although neither knife was adopted as a military issue knife, they both have become enormously popular styles. In years past, when time allowed, a few of these #14 and #15 blades were made in the 6.5" length."

WOW! Pretty cool, Rex! I always thought the 5-1/2" blade was a request from the Marines, possibly for use by Marine Aviators. Did I get it wrong?? Anyway ... a very cool Randall. Tony

I was in the 5th Special Forces in Vietnam, 1967-end 1968. In early 1967, ordered a type 14 Randall. My knife was delivered after about a 9 month wait just before I left for Vietnam. I think it had a Solingen blade though it may have been carbon ( lots of discussion about it at the time... cost was about $65 or so... about 1/2 months pay), and I think I had my name on one side. Why do I “think?”… because leaving Vietnam a hand carry bag with my Randall, 12 rolls of film, many keepsakes including 9mm pistol that was “lost” or stolen. I can never replace the mementos. But… after the passage of 40 plus years, I decided to buy another Randall… not necessarily as a collector (I collect far too many things now), but more for the memory. So… I bought this one. It looks like a reasonable facsimile to the one I took to Vietnam except without the Solingen blade. ( Note: Viet-period Special Forces REQUIRED personal artifacts: Randall knife, Rolex watch, star-saphire ring, engraved Zippo lighter, Montagnard brass bracelet). I apologize about the pedestrian nature of this knife, compared to some of the beauties displayed in this line. From the picture does a provenance of late-1960s, early-1970s seem reasonable? Thanks for any feedback, and thanks for the beautiful creations displayed.

Jack (?), Very cool #14. Not pedestrian at all! Someone more knowledgeable than me will post about the vintage ... I think it could be as late as late 70s - early 80s? Thanks for posting and welcome to the Forums! By the way ... Someone I know in my neighborhood was in SF, in Vietnam, and I only recently asked him if he knew about or owned a Randall Knife. His eyes lit up and yes, he said ... he still has it! We'll be getting together soon and I'll write up a little story for the RKS newsletter and the Forums, and get some photos. Stay tuned. Tony

Not to imply anything but seems like a lot of folks were SF or seals or something. I didn't run into many and most of them don't talk about it. This is not a flame or to piss anyone off. Just an observation.

Yes, there are a lot of imposters out there. I'm not one however. One reason no one talks about it, except to each other, is because it is just too hard to explain... the jargon, the geography, etc. And the questions that get asked are pretty boring and predictable. My twin brother served two tours with SF in Vietnam, '66-67, and most of '68. His second tour, '68, was with MACVsog and overlapped my tour. Below is a picture of the two of us taken in 1968 in Kontum, and another exactly 40 years later. I'm looking for pictures of either of us with our Randalls in Vietnam ... by the way, I do not know many SF from that era who did NOT have a Randall. But about Randalls. Gene still has his Randall model 14. He is taking pictures to send to me to post... but actually it was his second Randall, therein lies a story. In April '68 his spike team, Delaware, was lifted out of Laos on strings (ropes). Riding his rope, his belt broke and he almost fell... saved himself but his Randall model 14, carbon blade, teethed, fell 3,000 ft into the jungle. Upon receiving his letter, Randall immediately rushed him a replacement, I think for free... amazing given the wait time for knives then. For the replacement, he got a Solingen blade, model 14 stainless, without teeth. Why? I now remember the intense discussions we had at the time in SF. The carbon blades would rust in a heartbeat in Vietnam. You could not keep them rust free... no way... Second, the raw leather sheaths would attract mold in about one week. Mold would propigate visciously. Hence just about all the SF used black shoe polish on their sheaths. I just about soaked mine (the one stolen from me) in neatsfoot oil until you could almost squeeze drops out of the leather, which turned dark dark almost black-brown and still the mold would try to appear. This is one reason you see so many "black" sheaths on Viet era Randalls. I even almost think that a Viet-era Special Forces Randall that has a sheath that is NOT black polished, was not actually a SF knife, or was not actually used in Vietnam. I will post my brother's second knife, model 14, Solingen blade, circa 1968, survivor of many SOG missions, here when he sends me pictures. Regards.

As promised, here is Gene’s second model 14 Randall, acquired after his first was dropped from a harness into the mountains of Vietnam. If I recall, Randall sent this Solingen blade replacement, for free, immediately, in May, 1968 directly to him in Vietnam. As you can see, it has seen 40+ years of rough service. This Randall has also seen interesting times in Africa on the Congo River, in Pakistan, in Afghanistan, and lots of places in between. I doubt that very many Randall 14s have trekked through five continents and numerous small and large conflicts from Vietnam to Afghanistan. He has several intercontinental-overseas “action” and/or "situational" pictures involving this Randall through the years that I might post later if they seem germane to this subject.

Close-up of Gene's Model 14 (below). Below - Picture of twin-bro with Randall model 14, 1966, near A-233 Ban Don. This would have been the teethed Model 14 that he lost when it fell from a Maguire rig in April ’68. Typical of SF, he had a "D" ring attached to bottom of the sheath I’ve gotten him interested in documenting his Model 14 from Vietnam to Afghanistan, Might add some additional pictures to this post using "edit" if anyone is interested. If you are interested in Gene's MACVsog tour, here is an account... the reference to losing his Randall is in footnote 8... but a Randll was on all of these missions. http://macvsog.cc/spike_team_delaware.htm#Spike Team Delaware at FOB 4, Kontum, Apr 68-Nov 68 This picture (below)shows me with my Randall attached upside down to my harness ... rumor-control scuttlebutt had this way of carring it to be easier to access. I learned through experience not to do this. Looking for a better picture with clear shot of knife.

I too carried my RMK upside-down (on my body armor). I used an elastic band to retain the handle in case it unknowingly became unsnapped in the heat-of-whatever. The possibility of losing it is the only downfall I could think of. It did seem easier to get to that way, at least for me. Whats the weapon in your right hand? More pics, please!

Sorry, long post: Here are a couple of more shots from twin-bro that feature Randall Model 14. Notes are included integral with photo. RVN north of Ban Don Apr. 1978 - Gene says he had Randall and 9mm under coat in this picture… which was the day the news arrived of the overthrow of Da'ud in Kabul by the Parcham communists in coup in Afghanistan. Re Wally - questions about previous pictures: Weapon in my right hand is a military issue 7-round 12 gage pump shotgun. Why? Oh… various reasons… short one-day medical patrol into village, possible shoot bird or rabbit on way, good weapon in bunkered village. Here is another example held by my friend, SSGT Lonnie Holmes, SF A-253 '68, later Dr. Lewis Holmes, UCLA, ( 'cuse me!). Notice the important non-issue re-hydration ration on hood of jeep.I also had an M-1 carbine slung on other shoulder… (note: I was not issued an M-16 until I was transferred to Ben Het about half way through my tour. Even then, I still carried the M-1 carbine on a lot of missions because that is what our strikers were armed with.) Re: Randall attached to BAR sling upside down. This was scuttlebutt good method of carrying knife. But in Vietnam, the usual heavy undergrowth terrain was a defining factor. Anything on the front of your equipment would hang up in the brush and you would find yourself on your back quickly. (I’ll post a picture later if I can create one). Plus … if you had to suddenly hit the dirt, anything on front of gear inhibited “low” movement. We rarely carried grenades, etc., attached to the front as the troops in WWII and Korea had done. (see below) We did not hack our way through the forest, but tried to move like smoke… flow around the thick stuff. Below - Lt. Gene H. Williams, 3/508PIR pathfinder stick commander, Normandy. Typical WWII airborne rig. Another reason… rumor passed around that some guy had hit the dirt and his knife had been jammed upward, penetrating the sheath and wounding him. I don’t know if it was true … wild stuff like that was often BS’d around … but it was just simpler to carry it on the belt thereafter. Other things about Randalls at the time. As noted, the so-called carbon-tool blades would accumulate rust daily, sometimes by the hour. More than a few SF troops traded or sold their Randall carbon-tool blades to new guys coming in… and then ordered stainless replacements. The Solingen blades were good, but were very difficult to sharpen to a fine edge because of the hardness. You basically had to choose… edge and rust=lots of work, or edge=lots of work and no rust. In the debates, some questioned the Randall cold-worked, oil-hardened steel composition (O1-grade? less nickel, tugunsten, more carbon?) at the time because of the rust issue ... but truth is that everything not blued rusted in the field there is always a trade off in material selection. It was just part of life in Vietnam … and owning a Randall was one of the cult-requirements of Special Forces in Vietnam. Finally, unlike twin-bro, on my last couple of long ( 1-2 week) missions I left the Randall in my bunker. Why? We were operating in a very steep mountainous AO .. the tallest in Vietnam.. up to 8,000 ft.. Climbing Montagnard-style, straight up, straight down, would just about wear your butt to where you didn’t care if you got shot. Each mission I lightened the load I was carrying until it was an absolute minimum. In the end, sick with dysentery and physically weaker, I decided if I needed a big heavy knife, I could use one of my striker’s homemade items (see below). I have one of those knifes … I’ll post a picture of it later if anyone is interested. I still carried my beloved Randall on the shorter medical patrols, etc. Sorry for the length of this post. Some more pictures of Randall-in-use may be forthcoming. By the way... on the stamped id on Gene's Soligen blade knife... I haven't seen that composition very much on the net. Was this the common one for these blades? I think my blade lacked the word "stainless", I just can't remember... Afghanistan about 2007 - Randall not shown, but other pics with it forthcoming

Again great post Jack.
A few questions:
Why were Randalls a must have for SF in vietnam? Did it help show who was a experienced troop vs someone who just arrived in country?
Also didnt the military still issue the parkerized ka-bar knives? Seems those would have been more rust resist albeit much weaker, were they just not to anyones liking?

Below is a hand-made Montagnard knife… typical… wooden sheath… compared with Randall 14. Re: Why did Special Forces have such an institutional requirement for Randalls? No particular reason except that it was a SF cult thing… unrelated to length of service in Vietnam. Anywhere in the world, Randalls and SF went together ... like SF and Rolex, or SF and star safire ring, or SF and green beanie (never worn in field except for photo ops), or SF and a WWII BAR belt for field equipment, or Vn SF and boy-scout scarf (but not earrings, bandanas, do-rags, fringe, LRP-type posturing stuff), etc. You either had a Randall or you wanted one… no one gave a hoot about other knives. Actually the knives themselves were rarely used for much more than opening rations, etc. BUT… a Randall was something you were just supposed to have…. Re: Ka-bar, issue knives, etc. Honestly, I don’t think I ever saw a knife issued by the US Army. I don’t even think they did it… maybe Marines, or somewhere, or maybe the supply boys in the rear got them, but no one I knew was ever “issued” a knife of any kind. The same goes for M-16 bayonets, etc. Never saw one, never wanted one, didn't know anyone who had one. Photo art… This is just a nice combo of good stuff. I tried to create a picture in my backyard showing why I quit carrying knife on front of BAR belt...bad picture... oh well. Keep in mind that the change was environmentally caused... the idea seems to be good in principle. Maybe in more open terrain... Regards...

Please continue posting your photos and stories. We love talking Randall knives here, but your stories and photos are putting these 'collectibles' into their proper historical context. It's much appreciated.
And we thank you for your service!

Thanks... check the name of that Lt. He was KIA on 20 June 1944 during 3/508 PIR (82nd Abn) attack on the town of Pretot. He commanded "chalk 18" pathfinder stick during D-Day jump. Word that he had twin sons born 2 days after D-Day reached his battalion 6 hrs after he was KIA. Ironic... iconic. Quite a few pictures and his story in general are on the net various places. Regards...

Twin-bro just sent me a msg. I can't repeat Afghan portion, but here are a couple of story lines:
"-- Second, check out the "sheen" on the back side of my sheath. Any knife, just like a carpet, which has actually been worn in the field will have that sheen."
"-- Third, a story from a mission 30 km north of Ban Don on the Dar Lac Plateau...high and flat and lightly wooded, you walked it in a day. A 'yard asked if he could borrow my Randall. I gave it to him. He cut a rope and looked at me as if he couldn't believe how easy it was.
"Next thing I knew he was hacking up bamboo on a stone for some reason, leaving dents in the edge. I was horrified. We were setting up an ambush on a high speed trail, rain was misting down, and here was my Randall with dents!
"He saw my expression, took the knife and hand ground it on a stone..just an ordinary stone, till the dents were gone...edge was gone too..but who cared in the end after the ambush and firefight that night which brought a spooky over us; claymores going off, 60mm mortars, and the burp and long red fingers of the spooky (puff the magic dragon) reaching down like the hand of god."

No new pictures.. yet. But with the internet I checked on something. We were all amatuer metalurgists 40 years ago and the composition of the steel in model 14 and the affinity to rust, was hotly debated. Here is one source and what I found out... I'll be darned.. all that years ago had a modicum of truth.. http://ajh-knives.com/metals.html"O-1 and O-2 are the most widely used general purpose oil hardening tool and die steels. They are used where it is desirable to maintain minimum distortion and dimensional change, and at the same time have a good combination of hardness and toughness. Machining characteristics of these grades are very good. O-1 steel is very popoular with forgers as it is easy to work with, and relatively cheap to buy. It takes and holds an edge superbly, and is very tough, but rusts easily. Used by Randall Knives." Typical Analysis O-1 Carbon 0.90 Manganese 1.20 Chromium 0.50 Tungsten 0.50 Vanadium 0.20

The question about kit model 14s jogged a memory. I found this sold on e-bay a few years ago. Strange... "You are bidding on an uncommon kit knife. Randall Models 14 and 15 (Solingen blades only) were available in kit form was Models 16, 17, and 18 were not. Kit knives could be purchased in the 1960s and 1970s but starting in early 1971 kit blades no longer carried the Randall trademark." I borrowed a lot of these pictures from the on-line posting of John Gibson’s collection: http://www.militaryfightingknives.com/collection.htmlBut I have a question…. Why is there such a variance in the number of teeth in the saw-tooth model 14s? They range from 16 teeth to 30 something. 18 teeth 19 teeth 19 teeth 26 teeth 30+ teeth 17 teeth

Mitchell is partially correct. At one time, you could order (specify might be more accurate) fine teeth, resulting in a higher number per inch. It seems you find finer teeth predominately in earlier pieces.
As I understand it, the same fella has been grinding teeth now for approximately 35 years or so.

Pre-Owned but in very great shape and well-cared for. Needed a Gutcher Sheath since the original Randall didn't come with it. Wonder how old it is?

A real beauty, and a nice picture and background. I like the hilt ... different and striking combo.
This saw-tooth M14 is my favorite RMK of all. I have one and I carried a solingen facimile in Vietnam. I cannot date yours because I lack experience ... but I think this basic model has been unchanged since the early '70s. Original sheath and stone would have helped date it. Perhaps there are some features that the more expert RMK club memebers can identify.
This is an Orlando stainless blade which raises a question that I've wondered about for 40 years, re: Randall Orlando stainless vs. Randall Solingen stainless.
The Randall Solingen stainless blades of the Viet era were notoriously hard to put an edge on. The soft stone included with the sheath would just not make a mark on the hard stainless steel. We therefore used a variety of local means to sharpen a Solingen stainless blade, usually scratching it up pretty good in the process.
Are the Orlando-stainless blades "softer" and easier to edge? Or are they, too, a hard steel needing special techniques to edge?

Alot of things can make a knife easier to sharpen. Somethings like chromium (needed for rust resistance) and nickel make them harder to sharpen. Randalls stainless is pretty easy to sharpen but not as easy as 01 tool steel. I would guess the german blades were just not of very high quality and had a low carbon content. I have done a few rust resistance tests on randalls and the current stainless is very rust resistant. Its one of the few steels I cannot get to rust. The 01 however you can watch rust if you put some sweat on the blade.

Kind words appreciated. I've tried polishing out some earlier scratches, it polishes well, but the scratches remain. I suspect this is a very hard steel that once sharpened, keeps its' edge. I have not tried putting a stone to it yet, and honestly will be very reluctant to do much more edge work to prevent newbie mistakes. If I were very anal, I'd look into sending it back to be polished, re-edged if Randall offers that service. But I also know to leave well-enough alone and enjoy its' "personality".

I don't know what is is, I think it's a sharpening error that has resulted in rounding of the blade edge. It's too clean and formed to be a break, imho. Unless it was a chip that someone tried to round out. I try not to notice it...and like to believe it left the shop like that. But I know it probably didn't!

Why would you let it rust? Just wondering. Well If I was using it I would wear off the protectant and thus leave it exposed.

Thanks for the compliments guys, glad you like them!
As far as the details, this is a peak at a project that I have been working of for a little while with another gentleman who is very familiar with Randalls! These 2 both have carbon blades, both are etched with a special number, and both have some very cool sheaths with them...these are part of a limited run known as the VST knives! Oh yeah, and the best part, they have both been "blasted" and parkerized for a subdued finish!
I'll get more details up as I can - Rob

Attached is another picture of my brother in Vietnam. This was taken Nov. 22 1966 somewhere south of Ban Don, and Pleiku, B-23 II-corp, Republic of Vietnam. At that time he was a part of Team A-233 Ban Don, 5th Special Forces. This shows him in the field sharpening his toothed Model 14, using orginal sharpening stone. This particular knife was later lost when his belt broke while riding a Maquire rig in early 1968. In May 1968 the lost knife was replaced by a Model 14 Solingen, previously pictured.

Ben, I can't tell from your pics, but is the back of the sheath stamped with an "M"? Nice at any rate, Capt. Chris Capt., What would the "M" signify??

A lot of Greg's sheath (I will have to take some photos), especially "Canteen-snapped" and riveted ones will be stamped with an "M". This denotes one of Greg's "Military" models. Most I have had made came with more of a natural tan leather, rather than the darker tan. Greg has made me waxed ones as well however. Hope this helps. Best, Capt. Chris Yes it is an M also the leather is a light tan, the pics are kinda crappy, I just had to show it off! Does the M add to the value?

There's a great article in the latest "The Backwoodsman" magazine (May/June) with the title "The Randall #14, A Warriors Tradition", by Dan Shechtman. If you all don't have The Backwoodsman magazine on your list, you should, lots of great outdoorsy stuff that you won't find anywhere else. One year rate is $23 at Backwoosman Magazine, P.O. Box 1740, Fulton, TX 78358, email bwmmag@cobridge.tv. Pap tested and approved.

Here is my Model#14 that I purchased a few months ago. I relly like the beefy blade on the 14's. Not only is this a great fighter, I think it would serve just as good around the camp. The year book is back from the good ole days when most of us could probally get out of bed without something hurting. I hope you enjoy.

That's a real nice Model 14, Jimmy. It similar to one I just delivered to a SF Sargent at Fort Bragg who's going to take it with him on his next tour in "the sandbox". His was the same except no finger grooves. His came with the standard "C" sheath. I didn't think anything slowed down Rangers, Jimmy. Not even age.

No inscription, at least not yet. The knife is in excellent condition... as is the sheath, though it has been worn some. This at least allows me to have a knife for each son.
Question - if I have something inscribed on the plate, can the plate be changed out later without destruction? Regards... Jack

Another Q capt. I think I remember seeing a RMK with an inscription plate back in about 1966 at Ft. Bragg, but only the model 14. Approximately when did this option become available and did other models offer this option?
I've been looking at a lot of old Randalls lately (kinda becomes a habit doesn't it?), but the plate doesn't seem to have been that popular. Can you still get a knife with this plate?

Hi :-) If the plate is epoxied it's not so hard to remove it. Warm air pistol will do the job easily.

Where do you get the plate engraved? Does the shop send it off or do you send it after getting it?

Pap The shop will engrave up to 5 initials, anything else you have to have someone else do it. Peter

I'm sure the shop would do a great job. But these days most local trophy shops have lazer or water engraving that is amazing in the ability to created just about any design on any metal. But I'm considering an old method used in Vietnam to scratch-engrave my unit and A-Team and-or perhaps the SF crest, but not initials. But maybe not ... I kinda like the plate though. I had an old zippo lazer engraved, but i keep my scratch-engraved one from Vietnam in a safe.

Well, guess my memory wasn't too bad. I found posted earlier this nice example in John Gibson's collection online, dated "early-mid '60s." I would guess the plate is mostly limited to combat handles though ... interesting question. http://www.militaryfightingknives.com/collection.html#Randall"Randall Model 14. Made aprox early 60's. The knife has a 7 1/2" Stainless Sawback blade with the "Low S" mark and a brass hilt. The handle is black micarta with an inlaid name plate. The sheath is a Johnson Large Rivet, Split Back with early leather lacings and a 2-tone gray stone."

Chevy it's basically like tying a hangman's noose upside down. I can do it but it's too dang confusing for me to try and explain. I think if you did a google search for how to tie a hang mans noose you can figure it out. Post it up when you get done.

Here my #14s: the first is dated 1997 (it's the only Randall I own that has been purchased directly through the shop... at that time the waiting was less than a year), while the second is one of the VST Series from Rob Schoening and Larry Vickers. Hope you enjoy

Welcome Stefano That is a nice pair of model 14s. Nice rifle also. Keep your ears open for the next shop sale in April, there are usually some 14s available with a very short wait.

Thank you for the nice comments The Stgw90 (Fass90/SIG550, as Bob already said) is the one I received back in 1990 when I joined the Army... a fantastic and very accurate weapon

This is an some awesome looking knife. The sharpened edge outline makes for a cool look to the knife blade. Thank-You Stefano for posting it. GREAT pictures..
ps: How does the handle feel being blasted like it is?

Thank you Sirs for the kind comments Michael, the blasting on the handle gives more grip... personally I prefer this finish compared to the "classic" polished Rob, thanks again for this great knife!! My other friend was very happy with his #18, too

Today I got my next Mod. 14: It is in a nice "Diver-Configuration". Not really a diver, because of the O1 blade. But I think, it is a real outdoor user. Thanks, Matthias

Here is my knife that I just received from a jolly guy with a beard, not him, but Capt. Chris, just in time for the holidays:)
I found a piece of slotted brown canvas micarta at the Blade Show this year so I ordered it then. Specs are SS,NS hilt, sawteeth, customer supplied brown canvas micarta (ironwood colored) with a border patrol shape handle. It turned out great as expected. I must have been good this year Peter

Here are a couple of #14. One is my personal CDT I ordered back in late 1991 and received in 1993. The second is a standard #14 that could be from the late 1980's.

I think tab there in shadow. I love basic pure 14 but new deep finger scallop sharp corner hurt when chopping. Otherwise would own. Beautiful new knife congratulations.
Oops...edit apology as missed which knife no tab...nucler not matthias. Nucler's is beautiful and now two great photo and knives this page.

If this to me, SFG or BP always. But would love a 14 with standard if sides of joints not bashed as i bashed. Same would like 14 also with old type canopy basher like Buxton. But Matthias 14 ist wunderbar und marvelisch.

Nice dueling set, Mr Tom. Beautiful too. Did you think maybe a bowie clip point on bottom one? Either way is perfect.

I wish for no C sheath too. Cut weight and bulk. Getting old and no more far away danger ranger so no failsafe sheath of need. Have talked with Greg and he will make black A sheath no stone pocket for my new knife describe below. Wish could have come straight from Randall.
Thanks for bottom knife photo with non C sheath. 1 1/2yr out still have 14 cdt and maroon micarta black spacers #1 fighter guard and butt of nickel silver. For small hand. Hope it much as yours and will dream it be so as that first photo i have seen of smaller diameter handle.

The sheaths appear to be #1-8" sheaths, i.e. narrow and slightly longer then the #14 blades. Do they sheath OK in those "A" style sheaths? Nice knives, Capt. Chris Yes, they are #1-8 sheaths (although only marked "8" on the back) and the knives fit quite nicely in them. To me, the A type sheath has a "cleaner" look than the C type, and as Romanum pointed out, they are less bulky. Anyway, I likes 'em! - -Buckspen

Mr Buckspen, i think you are lucky. Or maybe not as much on older sheath. Blade width not a constant and i have tried wider blade type in narrower sheath of modern make and had edge trying to slice welt. Maybe knife variation, maybe older sheath wider.

That as i thought Captain. On military knife they not leave without SOMETHING through tang except briefly. I glad you said since if lowly me had, somebody have told me glue NEVER fail. No that happens all time but military failsafe as possible or hope so. For epoxy, main thing is prevent initial shift.
Buxton VERY unusual in modern time.

I was lucky that these fit well. I had to try several different ones before getting the correct fit. - - -Buckspen

DW,
Thanks so much for your very generous offer, but I think I'll have to pass:-)!
Interestingly, this was the second #14 in the same configuration I acquired in the past year (different handle materials only difference...). Thanks,

Mr Buckspen, they are lovely and looks as if made to order. Are photo oriented right and left and right gunfighter special? Then almost need belt with sharpening stone loops.

I have not a 14 except the one due Oct 2016. Will fix as soon as other two "any day" arrivals arrive in real. Probably just get classic whether work for hand or not. Like #1, it just a must.

Got a black one for my #14 due to arrive this summer: review of SPEC OPS Combat Master sheath. I drooled starting the 1:55 mark, and all my questions answered. The Randall leather sheath I am getting, I do not want to destroy it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-0Ivbqlh4E

Looks similar to the one I ordered. Except mine is coming with:
- nickel silver double hilt #14 style - waxed sheath (won't be used; I have a black Spec Ops Combat Master sheath to use instead) - Border Patrol handle with black Micarta grips
Looks nice!!!

Very Nice Model #14s. I am also a big fan of the Spec Ops Combat Master sheaths and the users all have one. The model #14 is not a small knife vs say a #28 so a good sheath system (how the sheath is worn) can make a difference if you carry one a lot. Tom V. I am not a fan of the "Gun Fighter" (low mount on the thigh) with a #14.

My first Randall, got it today: #14 SS sawteeth blade, Border Patrol black Micarta handle, double nickle-silver hilt, full tang, waxed sheath. This was my retirement gift to me after 21 years of service in the Army that officially concludes 31 AUG 2015. I wished I had bought one/know about Randall's years ago. I sold a NIB Gerber BMF w/sawteeth I purchased as a green 2LT in Alaska 20 years ago to partially finance this. I think I upgraded. This won't be my last one!!!

My newest addition. Originally thought it may look cool displayed, but as soon as I held it and felt the balance, and how it fit my hand like it was custom made just for my hand, I'm afraid now it is going to be my go to knife for all things brutal. I will be beating on it. That includes chopping, whoppin', batoning and basically relying on it for lots of tasks, and certainly enjoying the heck out of it. No prying though. I never do that. If she breaks, I'll put the pieces in a display case. I don't see that happening though.

I usually don't like a large choil, but this one did not stick out to me as being large. Guess I was more taken with the green and the rest of the blade shape.

Handsome blade Tom. That green handle is super. Is it standard RMK green micarta? Should be a fine working knife.

Hi Tom,
According to the Captain, it is Jade Green and no longer available. Mine was apparently supplied by customer. I like it better in person than the photos of it I initially saw. Glad yo like it.

I got a yesterday afternoon model 14 mini #1581. Beautiful design and high quality finish. I wonder what it is the year of release? Today I completed the repair and used the knife. Excellent steel. Knife blunt due to contact with the concrete wall. I think if there was a model 10-4 with #14 grind, 1/8 thickness, it would be my ideal for city EDC Sorry for the poor quality of the photos..

Brown button and canteen snap. I couldn't guess what the rarest variation/combination of sheath, knife, handle material, etc, is,... but a brown button canteen snap is my favorite sheath.

Steve, no shit, the leather smells new! Literally. I don't think I have ever had one that smelled like that. Pretty bazaar. Absolutely no signs of age whatsoever. It was kept in a safe deposit box since it was new was how I understood it.

Yes I did. I am a welder so that kind of mod is easy for me have all the right tools and knowledge to not mess anything up. I figured I could get that now and make it perfect for me or order it the way I wanted and wait forever. I don't plan on selling it so I made it a perfect user for me.

I picked up a model 14 last weekend. SS, black micarta single finger groove handle, forward curved hilt and JRB sheath. It was a three way horse trade to get me the knife but I enjoy things like that, also introduced the owner of 14 to RKCC. He also had a "kit" marked blade model 7 stag and compass and an older 6 inch model 5 SS micarta, finger groove with compass. He was kind enough to bring these two up to the show for me to drool over when he brought me the model 14.

Got lucky and grabbed this 14 shortly after it was offered here for sale. Good possibility Tom Clinton commissioned this knife as some have recently suggested. One beautiful piece of artifact fossil with outrageous color.

PS: As short as the sheath appears, it could be a Combat Companion! The blade is short..... could be a Companion or a #15.

Rocky, It says Schmidt & Bender on the side.
Looks like their 1.1-4x20 PM II ShortDot model
My guess is a Combat Companion w/teeth

Rocky, I was kidding, I had to blow up the picture to make it out myself. Zeis has been top of the line since pre WWII. I have a Leupold HAMR w/Delta Point on my Colt AR. I can't afford Zeiss or Schmidt Bender.

I have a Leupold .... (because) I can't afford ... There's a quote you don't see every day... (usually "Leupold" is on the back half of that sentence)

Question for the knowledge bank.. bought a #14 brass double guard, "C" sheath, black micarta handle with finger grips in 1981(new) from a Cutler in Australia.
Seem to remember it had 2x brass slotted screws in handle with exposed tang on top edge handle. Is my memory wrong? Haven't seen any resembling it here.
I know it was wrong to sell it.. but it just didn't fit my smallish Man hands. I did keep the #18 and it served me well. Still does. Thanks, Wayne

Ok. So if I was to replace the #14 (7.5 inch)and I just don't like the finger groove handles, which would be the more comfortable in Micarta, Border Patrol or Finger groove (1x)?
Considering I have smallish hands, thinking towards the Border Patrol handle. Opinions would be appreciated as I've not held either, let alone used one for long period.
My #5 7 inch just doesn't have the mass required for dealing with Jungle or coconuts. I want to down size from my current Bush knife (Busse Battle Mistress)which gets quite a workout when living on Tropical Islands for 6x months each year. Thanks Wayne

Border patrol can still be turned "Blade up" in your hand where it feels weird with finger grips or single finger grips. If that's not an issue I'd go with border patrol or single finger grip.

The border patrol is a very comfortable handle for sure, however I find that if your hands gets wet or muddy it gets pretty slippery, I like the finger grips for that reason, it's not coming out for you hand. Really it's what you like, and how and where you intend to use your knife. Just my two cents.

Thanks to those who have replied so far. Chief, your comment about rotating knife is particularly pertinent, as yes, this is something I do a lot when clearing track in Jungle. I know a machete or Cane knife would be "better" but if travelling by Sea Kayak, not really practical. A lot of thinner scrub responds to cutting more efficiently by using a upswing as gravity pushes stalk down against blade. The downside (!) is that it is very easy to rotate blade and slash Achilles tendon if not concentrating. Haven't done it, but am always aware of consequences of doing this in isolated area days away from help.

Eric, Here is the letter which accompanies the certificate. I have a 3 ring binder full of documents that go with the knife.

Outstanding piece Bill. IIRC, Rhett found that knife a long time ago. It could have been a similar one, but yours rings a bell.

Very sexy knife Joe! Got a picture of that in a 12-9? Have it in a Thorpe. Used to own it and trying to get it back. Most teeth on a single knife ever. Looking for a photo.

This is my Model 14 that I got back in the early 80's. It was the first Randall knife I ever owned. It was part of my gear back when I was a LEO. I have since passed it on to my son. He used it to cut the cake on the day he married my daughter: /Randall_knife_cutting_the_cake.jpg[/img]

Bill--
Your Marine with his own SF detachnment was not the only Marine with the SF.
I worked over the years with Al DeProspero who started out as a Marine, worked with Bull Simon in Laos, etc.
He yanked over to Army and was a Major when I first met him, went to Ft. Bragg when he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and got a new command. He eventually retired as a Colonel.
I was in a meeting with him and other former SOF when Al noticed a book I brought along, said book being about SOG in Vietnam--Al then commenting to one of his cohorts across the table about having a trunkful of knives at home, with all the SOG knives having the points broken off. [Al "borrowed" my book,...wonder where it is today!]
Al always celebrated the Marine Corps' birthday with a cake whenever there was a get-together that coincided with that date.
Cross-overs between services make for better performance--something learned along the way.

I have no idea how many "crossover" men there were, but these articles from 1966 say that he was the first. Obviously, I never met the gentleman who owned this knife, and I was not the author of any of the provenance provided. But I believe it to all be true.
Thanks, TB

#14 with Alternate Ivory. I really like that the forward curved hilt is longer on the blade edge end. After looking at the handle coloring, I know why RMK marked these blades with an A/I.

This is my oldest and I do not known exactly how old #14. Am having trouble matching spacers to date it. Not that it matters a lot but curious

There was a time when the shop had some bad spacers....they faded. This appears to be one of those knives. I think that this happened in the 80’s sometime. This sheath looks like a late Johnny Johnson sheath so I’m guessing late 80’s or very early 90’s.

Hi, considering purchasing a #14 s/s with Border patrol handle. Did have a #14 30 yrs ago with finger grooves, but didn't fit my small hands well) Q, do they have a full tang exposed on top, or are they a cut down concealed tang hidden in handle? Thanks Wayne

The top is the full tang (exposed tang) version with Border Patrol handle. The bottom one is the CDT version with a Model #22 style handle.

Rob,
A correction to the clarification.
One can order or buy a Model 14, Full Tang. Or one can buy a Model 14-CDT, Cut Down Tang.
The “Cut Down Tang” is not a chargeable option on the 14 or 15.
It is $15 less than a full-tang Model 14, however, it will come standard with a leather washer handle and duraluminum butt cap (like a Model 1), instead of black micarta with finger grips.

I'm thinking (a rare moment) that if you order the "Border Patrol" Handle or the "Single Finger Grip" Handle on a Model 14 or 15, for example, that it will come standard with the #1-style double brass hilt instead of the expected Model 14 hilt.
If you are placing a Model 14 or Model 15 order and want the Model 14 double brass hilt, you need to specify you want your Model 14 with the "#14 Hilt" (14h). Requesting the #14 hilt with the border patrol or single finger grip is a non-chargeable option, so it doesn't count on the five maximum chargeable options.
So, if you wanted a Model 14 in stainless steel, single finger grip, green micarta, and a Model 14 brass hilt, the order would appear like this:
M14, SS, SFG, GM, 14h.
Hope this helps

Chris,
On my second to last order, I requested two 14’s in green micarta one with BPH & one with SFG. The BPH has the #1-style hilt and the SFG has the #14 hilt like the one in your photo.
I dug out the invoice, maybe the #1-style hilt applies only to the BPH.

BPH always has a #1 hilt unless a 14H is requested...and vice-versa on the SFG

Thanks guys. I only have one model 14 and it's a mid-60's knife I bought from the Tuna Meister. It's a great classic RMK but I have been wanting to get another more current 14 and that one reached out and grabbed me. Really cool what can be done with the different options for these knives. Thanks Cap.

Just thought I’d start sharing more…
A model 14 - 7-1/2 CDT, fighter style - standard handle in black micarta with brass double hilt and brass butt cap, RWB spacers. (The “Z” configuration in the catalog foldout but in SS).
Reminds me of a #1-8 on steroids.
The blade is massive, and the handle on this one is massive too (bigger and thicker than I usually see standard micarta on this sort of knife and with a more prominent "slab-side" shape). The #14 without sawteeth maintains its ¼” thickness nearly half-way up the blade’s spine, making it beefy as heck. Pictures don’t do it justice.
A very pretty but serious knife. Makes a hefty “fighter.”
Shown next to my #14 with white micarta FG handle, NS hilt and sawtooth option and next to a standard #1. The blade on this #14 CDT seems to dwarf these other two. (Even with the CDT, at 15.3 oz., it comes in nearly an ounce heavier than the full tang white handle #14 shown and almost 5 oz. heavier than the #1-8. It’s a big knife).
Thanks for looking, Gary

Here's a model 14 that was offered for sale here a few years ago. I really wanted it but Guido beat me to it. I really like the look of that butt cap but, as far as I can determine, RMK does not currently offer that butt cap for the 14-style finger grip handle. I'm guessing that it was never generally available but was one of those things that was only rarely done. Anyway, pretty cool Model 14 IMO.

True. And it's a big chunk of brass too. Gary Ps. When I describe my #14 CDT with a "standard" handle, I mean general "standard shape handle" like you'd find on a #1, etc. It's not the standard style for the #14 - as Joe clarifies... that's the FG. Should have worded that better. ...

One for you to check out: It looks like they are brothers, here the upper part of the blade is very similar to grinding 5-7 with teeth, these old blades look more evil than modern. Maybe it seems to me because of the lack of a choil, that seems to have been removed by sharpening/using. https://www.gunsinternational.com/guns-f...un_id=101357636

Somebody ruined that blade. It almost appears it was done purposely, taking that much off the blade. It seems beyond "sharpening".
Plus, it is not brown micarta.

I found on the Internet, I liked the picture. I do not know who it is, but that's exactly #14. Let it be here.
That is Former Delta Operator Tom Spooner. Runs Warrior Heart now. His mom was my 2nd grade teacher lol. Him and his brother Scot were in the Unit. I seen a photo of Scot's Model 1 with stag handle. Spoke with Tom and he said it is a 14

Vintage 'MAROON' ..My customer it from Jim Behring 20 years ago. Almost a light 'brown'.
The Model 14 was ordered last year & arrived last week.

Buck -
Behring put that handle on is what you are saying? RMK never offered full tang knives in maroon. At least I have never heard of one unless there was customer supplied material.

Joe,
I stand corrected and missed some punctuation and words. The line should have been:
Vintage 'Marooon' slotted handle material bought from Jim Behring 20 years ago. Almost a light 'brown'.
My customer furnished the micarta for a Model 14 ordered last year, that came last week from the Shop.

Wally - Upon reading your post, I went back a looked thru some records/photos and found it. IIRC it was a CDT, not a slotted handle, but I am not certain though. After some more thought, I think it was a full tang. http://www.rmkcollector.com/product-details/model-14-heavyGood Memory you have

Rocky,
Seems to me it was all the same shade of maroon, as if it had been polished before I got it.

Is this handle legit?
Browsing the Bay and found this Solingen Model 14, seller says came out of a local estate.
The handle is "unique" with downturned butt on the Micarta, three pins along the top of the Micarta, and layered pieces of Micarta (see the under-view image of the handle).
Is it "shop original" or a re-do?

Correction...
It appears to be a Model 15.
The seller does not specify, but looking again the blade appears to be a 15.

New here. New to Randalls. Here is my first RMK.
I believe it’s a Vietnam Era 1965 Model 14 Attack Sawback Single filled bolt Hole. Do you all think it is Brown Micarta or Black? Is this sheath considered a “Johnson Split Back”? Seems like it may have some value… Any info would be appreciated ! Thanks [img:left]http://https://www.dropbox.com/sh/q9fu0y83kf9pqkv/AABrUoCU8YaPErXr1_ppXAeJa?dl=0[/img]

Rocky,
The color of micarta is hard to identify. I have two boxes of it I bought from Jim Behring several years ago. Some of it is easy to identify, some not so much. I am going to be moving some of it along but I'm not sure how to do that so the buyer gets what he thinks he is buying.
