Thanks to all who have participated thus far. This week we'll be looking at some Model 16 Diver's. I know we have several members who are divers, and if they have a Randall Model 16 Diver's Knife, hopefully they will share pictures and stories with us. From Randall Made Knives: The History of the Man and the Blades by Robert L. Gaddis, pp. 162-163 Quote:
The new year of 1958 ushered in another new style of Randall Made knife, the number 16 Diver's Knife. The first of these was made for a man who was as well known in writing circles as Bo was with knife aficionados, James Jones, the author of such best-seller action novels as From Here to Eternity, Some Came Running, and The Thin Red Line.
Most of the correspondence with James Jones has yet to be found, but we do have the original shop sketch for the first hand-forged Model 16s....
The notations on the drawing of "Heaviest Possible Bevel-like Solingen Made" and "(Should be able to get 1 1/4" here, out of 1" stock--using care)" were Bo's instructions to the man who had to hand-forge these first blades. He wanted this new knife style to be able to withstand severe use, knowing well that a diver will put his knife to tasks it was never intended for. The reference to "like Solingen Made" when describing the bevel angle referred to those on the German-made blades for his lower priced Model 14 and 15 styles....
The handle shown in the shop drawing is a molded, green Tenite one for the then current Model 15, but the hilt is most unusual. We can only assume that the first few knives had this strange, foreshortened style of hilt with almost no lower extension. All later knives, including the one first pictured in the twelfth printing of the catalog, have a conventionally shaped lower extension, similar to those found on the Models 3 and 4..,.
The Diver's Knife first appeared in the twelfth printing of the Randall catalog. It was illustrated by a heavily retouched photo and described as "DIVER'S KNIFE--7" blade of 1/4" stainless steel stock. Top cutting edge sharpened. 3 7/8" green Tenite handle, same as on Models 14 and 15. (Other handles and extra features not available.) Designed especially for heavy duty saltwater use. Nickel silver hilt. Wrist thong included. Comes with special oil-tanned sheath (similar to Model B sheath) equipped with keeper thong, arm and leg thongs. (Wt. 14 oz.)"
...Micarta handles were advertised as an option starting in March 1965, but we have already noted earlier ones being ordered with such handles. By early 1967, the Micarta handle was standard. By the spring of 1967, the wax-impregnated sheath had become standard as well, and sawteeth on top of the blade were an option.
Lady and gentlemen, may we please see some Diver's Knives. Kevin

Miles' Diver isn't that special. It only has: 1) Tenite handle 2) Extended tang 3) O-1 steel 4) No choil 5) N/S squared off guard 6) Unique Heiser sheath with no keeper strap 7) Original leather thongs 8) Near mint What's the big deal? ![](/images/graemlins/grin.gif)

I don't think it is O-1 steel, but is actually stainless steel that is unmarked. I believe tenite was used from mid-1950’s to mid-1960’s. The “SS” stamp was not used until around 1963, and a year or so later the “SS” was changed to a single “S”. Before that time, there was no marking when stainless was used. Here are two of these earliest stainless markings. -Steve

I think I remember reading in the Gaddis book that the first Divers were O-1. Certainly, Miles' knife falls into that category.
You're probably right, Tom. I just went back to the catalogs. Couldn't find the #16 in the 1959 catalog (even though the Wickersham timeline says it began in 1958), so I checked out the 1961 catalog, which mentions only stainless. Here's what it says:
![](http://www.knifetalkforums.net/imageupload/33683-1961.jpg) Of course, like many Randall Made Knives, there were a lot of variations. Got to go back and re-read Gaddis--I still have a lot to learn! -Steve

Hi Steve,
According to the Gaddis book on page 163, the first Divers were offered in O-1 as well as stainless. I'm certainly no expert. It could be an unmarked stainless blade like you said, which would make it even more rare.
Regardless, it's a gem!

Don, I dunno if the blade is flat ground, though I kinda doubt it as RMK doesn’t make too many flat ground blades...but, Miles could prolly look at his face-on, from tip to hilt, and see if it is indeed flat, or if there is an ever so slight dip...
Steve, let me help ya out here. Gaddis wrote on page 162 ’13 May 1957, #16 Solingen Blade – James Jones – Marshall, Ill.’ On the next page he wrote of one being sent to Jones in March of 1958, followed by commentary about the fourth Model #16 being ordered in January of 1959. So, take your pick of dates
All, as to catalog introduction; the Diver’s knife was shown in the 12th catalog printing of early (February?) 1959 on page 12, available in stainless steel only – the 14th catalog of late 1960 showed availability of both steel types. See that part in the catalog page you posted about 'Swedish Steel'...that references O1 high-carbon tool-steel. (Doh, Tom beat me to it...lol)
So, carbon steel obviously became an option sometime between those two dates; just when is still up for debate. (although IIRC, it 'was' available in 1959)
The model #16 continued to be offered with a Carbon steel blade until just prior to the release of the 21st catalog in early 1971...so, through 1969 and possibly into 1970. As you already mentioned though; the stainless steel type indicator markings, whether stamped or etched, weren’t used until 1963. Tenite was all but discontinued by early 1965.
So, shootin' from the hip here - at the very least, carbon steel Model #16’s ordered between the latter half of 1960 and the middle of 1963 would, theoretically, be externally identical to their stainless steel brethren.
Hope that helps

Ha, you guys are waaay too kind ![](/images/graemlins/wink.gif) Seriously though; I'm just an enthusiast like you guys (well, maybe not as much as Steve)...with both feet planted firmly on the ground (Edna would likely say 'in cheek')... Miles, the #16 BG shows on page 162 of 'Randall Made Knives: The History of the Man and the Blades' is said to have been the fourth Diver (a Tenite) made...it has a choil. The Tenite diver used on the cover of our 3rd edition Randall Timeline has a choil; all the Tenite's handled Model #16's that I've seen in person or in books or websites have choils; all the catalog photos of Tenite #16's had choils (prolly the same photo, reused)...yours, and Bart's, shown on page 61 of our book are the only two I've seen without choils... Yet, I'm a firm believer that when 'one Randall knife configuration is seen' there's usually more....when 'two are seen' there's just gotta be more. Not many Tenite diver's out there, and certainly fewer without choils, but there are a few anyway... ![](/images/graemlins/laugh.gif) At to the keeper strap dealie; I think that was a Maurice Johnson idea in '61-'62...could be wrong of course about that, but the keeper strap 'was' being used by Johnson, by '63 for sure...

David,
Thank you for the great pictures. I went to your site and it is beautifully presented.
My compliments. You look like I imagined Dirk Pitt looking.
It that a Sea Dweller or Submariner in the lower picture? The watch band is novel for that watch.
Being the 'always have backup' person when my wife presented me with the Sea Dweller in 1980 I ordered an extra bracelet for it as I ran across a person who had wrecked his watch band on a hard dive & it took Shreve's 2 months to obtain another. It also took them 2 months to get me the backup. I still have it in original case. My original band has survived all my predation.
Best wishes and safe diving.

Here is one of my RMK 16s in use last summer. I am still searching for the right configuration to attach the knife to my gear for diving. The regular waxed sheath attaches nicely to a belt, but this BC has an integrated weight system and the jacket covers the knife if it is on its own belt. The waxed sheath does not work well as a leg sheath. In this photo, the knife is in a Combat Master sheath which is attached to a D-ring. This is a decent placement. However, the keeper strap on this sheath is difficult to snap, especially with gloves on. A velcro keep would be better. I am thinking about having a Kydex sheath made, or picking up an old pancake flipper to use for ankle placement, but they are hard to come by. Does anybody have any ideas?

David,
Just a thought, but maybe give Greg Gutcher a call at Sullivans. They could most likely make you anything you want to your needs. I don't know anything abut diving but it looks like with the amount of gear you have in that photo, functional space is a problem. I believe Greg is taking orders now so give him a try.
Best, Warren

Warren and Ben,
I have come to the conclusion that my entire scuba equipment configuration needs a rethink. I have acquired everything piecemeal over the past several years, and I have made the transition from mostly cold water to mostly warm water diving. I may just acquire two different sets of gear, one for cold and one for warm, rather than try to combine everything and compromise.
As for the knife, it is not so much a question of what to keep the knife in but how to attach it to me and how to securely operate the keeper with gloves on. I already have a Blackhawk sheath, but I don't like it. IMO, the Spec Ops sheath has a better configuration. Sullivan's may be an option for a special order, or an ankle sheath may work best. A forum member has graciously agreed to sell me a pancake flipper sheath, which I appreciate very much. I will just have to continue experimenting.
Now, let's see some more 16s!

David, Good looking sheaths. Do you plan on using either sheath in the water? The Diver/Pancake has always been one of my favorite RMK offerings. I've always wondered how well the waxed leather would hold up especially in salt water. The closest my #16 gets to water is when I flush the toilet in the other room. ![](/images/graemlins/grin.gif)

some ideas.....
I've been diving since 1970. I am an ex Navy diver, NAUI SCUBA instructor, and commercial diver since '74. I always place a dive knife on my chest, via a harness or vest. The make or size of knife is not important. I tried every option imaginable. I hated ankle carry and waste placement was always difficult to access.

Very cool old Randall. Is it stainless? Hard to see the stamp

No stamp with the overwhelming majority of early #16's being stainless steel. It is unlikely you will encounter an early carbon steel #16. Very, very few were made. Think about it, why would you order a carbon dive knife?
Carbon was an "option" so to speak, with stainless being standard, albiet a bit more expensive.

You're right. I think I will loan him my Astro when we go diving again this spring. His friend Scott may be on that trip, so maybe he has a spare?
My dive buddy has a serious problem with things going missing (like a certain watch sent to the Smithsonian which never arrived, and canceled checks showing up at autograph auctions), so I don't blame him for carrying an old Tabata dive knife when he travels. But seriously, some traditions must be upheld!

Ken, I gotta tell ya ... I'm usually not crazy about some of the red micarta out there, but this is REALLY NICE! Maybe its the blue in it, but I really like it, and the SFG looks great with it and the blade shape!! Congats, Tony

Nice. I saw that earlier in this thread, but I don't mind seeing it again. Is your SFG #16 SP#1 handle Red or Red/Blue Micarta?

Its just red. I have to send it off to the shop for engraving soon. Enjoy yours.

Bart, Try running a magnet over it. Sticks = O1, No stick = SS Cheers.

Bart,
There is (only) one thing that I will give Crutchtip credit for, and that's his technique for distinguishing S/S from 01: Put a very small droplet of liquid bluing on an inconspicuous place (such as the underside of the choil). If it's S/S it will wipe right off. If it's 01 the bluing will take. Works like a charm!
Best,

![](http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d13/drshame/RandallModel14-2.jpg) How's this look? It was sold to me as a Model 14 SS Spearpoint/Sawtooth and looks identical in my Newbie Eyes to other model 16's here with NS Double Bolsters. What's the difference and is it in effect, the same knife? If it was sold as a Model 16..I'd still buy it, I like the design/style very much.

Mitchell/Capt. Chris:
"Newbie Help" is greatly appreciated. My Model 14 Spearpoint came with an aftermarket, unmarked, basketweave leather sheath. But it didn't fit in all the way and stood out about 1/2 an inch! The sheath in my picture just came from Sullivans, which they had in-stock. It fits like a glove. And fits all the way in, as expected.
Again, help appreciated for overwhelmed newbie.

Thanks to the good folks at Randall for getting this #16-SF to me so quickly so that it can be forwarded to a young Marine in Afganistan. I opened it long enough to take a couple of my "continue to be not so good pictures", securely repacked it along with some other things and forwarded it on to its new owner. Hope it helps to keep him and others safe.

another #16-SF that will head out to Afganistan this week. I'm still about 18 mos. away from the one that I've ordered for myself and can't wait. Man, these really feel outstanding and increadibly strong.
The WW1 helmet was worn by my grandpa who was the trigger man on a Browning, water cooled machinegun in the 314th Mach. Bat. Seemed like an appropriate background.

This is my first ordered knife, courtesy of Capt Chris. I really like this set up, and I hope to get out on, and in, the water with it. I grabbed the nylon sheath also, what a beast. The etching commemorates the order date of my first. Heck of a turnaround by Capt Chris, thanks!

Piddeling around this morning.... Thought I would post up my 16. It was given to me by Santa somewhere around 1963 or so. I made THE mistake of sending it to the shop to remove all the stories.....They did a very good job!! Wish I had not done it...this for those who consider such actions. I guess that it would not be bad if the knife was not yours from the start... :-)Rocky

Hope this is in the right forum...I have heard that Johnson stamped a "W" on his waxed sheaths that he made for the model #16, supposedly this was done staring in the early 1970s
I have a model #16 black micarta handle, brass lined thong hole with no "W" on the waxed sheath (the sheath is identicle to a Brown Micarta unlined thong hole version vietnam era #16 knife and Johnson waxed sheath that I also have)
My question is the lined thong hole would date the knife to later 70s at the earliest, right and I know that the knife and sheath have been a pair since new so what gives?
"Is this just first in last out" or am I missing something...Thanks in advance for any help I may recieve here.
By the way Rocky that is quite the nice Tennite!

First Randall I ever bought for myself was a Model #16 that I ordered thru Tom Clinton. Has my name on it so it is a keeper for life.
I have others that I use more but that model was still "My First Randall".
Always enjoy reading your posts, David.

Thanks Bill. Both my grandfathers served and my dad. I always felt like I broke the tradition. My one grand father served in ww2 and Koreanwar and just passed this year at 90 years old. I was so proud of that man and his story. He was so proud to be a marine. He wore his marine ring and flew the marine flag on his porch till the end.

Supporting the troops can be done many ways, and the soldiers themselves are always ready to tell you how much they appreciate it. This is a cookout some volunteers put together for some soldiers at Ft. Jackson. They're off duty, so some are in civvies. ![](http://i59.tinypic.com/2v7szv4.jpg) Here a couple of Randall Knives have been presented to soldiers in their unit that have served over 20 years. The knives were factory etched with their name and rank. The money for the knives was raised by volunteers. ![](http://i60.tinypic.com/2qsme4x.jpg)

How about this beautiful Model 16 Diver with waxed pancake sheath? Not everyday that you can find them with perfect rubber straps either!

Is/has the 16#1 Special Fighter been offered in an 8" blade?

Rod,
Not as a catalog offering as I am aware. As with all things Randall, there's always the possibility of a "one-off" floating around somewhere.

I was envisioning an 8" with saw/no saw teeth and border patrol handle in green micarta with brass double hilt. Plenty of other choices though.

Rod,
That's doable in a Model 1-8. Same blade as the 16 just not full tang. You'll have to supply the micarta if you're looking for green. The Captain may be able to help you. He had some jade green a while back but I don't know if he's got any left.

No sir, just the stock 7". I have seen model #16's in shorter lengths, but not the SP16. Mitchel, This SP16 example I have has a 6 3/4" blade.

Eric, I missed your post. Those small sawteeth are sweet, also is that handle material customer supplied? Overall great package, hold onto that one. It is on Page 29 (P288) of Stidham's 1991 green catalog 6 3/4" Stainless with fine sawteeth. Stainless Model 1 Style double hilt. Maroon micarta (I think supplied by the shop) with 14 style handle. This was supposedly an RMK Shop employee dive team knife. I had no idea Randall ever had an employee dive team.

I have a 16 with that same tight stitched, smooth back Johnson sheath. Seems like I've seen them mostly on 16s.

Very attractive knife all around! Best part is the handle shape - Border Patrol, but the most subtle I've ever seen.
I know someone who wants this shape BPH on a #14. How do I accurately describe it so it is shaped as nearly exactly as this is? (Standard black or green Micarta is his preference, so I'm not seeking the oh so elusive orange G-10/Micarta handle material.)

Cap, I can indeed clarify this one w/o a doubt...
There were in fact 6 made (the first ever Maroon Micarta) for the "Randall Dive Team" as we called ourselves...9 employees (a few spouses were among the 9) with one outsider to fill the class)...
There were 4 BPH handles, one SFG and one with the four-finger grooves...MINE...the one Eric now owns was indeed the one made to my specifications, but alas, I could not afford this in 1984...so Jack Crider took possession for an extra few bucks for me...
I have only sold 2 knives away and regret them both terribly, but at least my Commemorative went for the down payment on my first house and has been a great investment over the years...

Thanks for the comments guys I just specified BPH,and it is more subtle than most of my other knives with BPH. I don't know why other than the knives are all hand made. I do like orange ![smile smile](/images/graemlins/default/smile.gif) Peter

This is an interesting knife. It has a few odd things about it. It's a 1964-ish Model #16 Diver with a Low S stamp. The sheath is a pancake style which was common on the 16, but it has a stone pouch which is not common. It has a tenite handle, but what makes that odd is that Low S knives were usually considered past the tenite handle period. The tenite is secured using the single screw, filled hole method, usually seen on brown and black micarta.... very unusual. Last is the etching on the back of the blade. There is the owner's name, but also the blade has been etched as a ruler. You can see the numbers 1 thru 6 from the tip to the hilt. Of course the hilt is 7" Joe Dorsky and I discussed it and he recalled some guys that were abalone divers using these and using the ruler to size the catch in some way. All in all a pretty cool knife. ![](https://static1.squarespace.com/static/55b95478e4b02dead8b5b8f3/5686c49757eb8dfaac5cc566/59b465ab37c581fbf87b239f/1504994738490/Studio+Session-1064.jpg)

I need help with dating nylon sheaths. What is the date the black nylon sheath with a white vertical right facing logo background RMK Logo in black stitching. The white background Logo patch is a rectangle and on the back of the sheath.

I ordered a SP1 from the shop back in late 2015 and it arrived in June of 2019. The next year I gave it to my brother for his 50th birthday. I finally got around to ordering the replacement with Capt. Chris this past April, picked it up at the Tulsa show a couple of days ago. ![](https://i.imgur.com/hnCMt6j.jpg)
