Cabin Fever Blues-N-Build
Members,
As many of you know, the lovely Elizabeth had a major shoulder surgery this past Wednesday. She is doing well..."but"...I'm "on the docks" for another month or two. In other words, "Cabin Fever" is setting in on the Ol' Captain...(aargh)!
So...What's say you about building a RMK for "Cabin Use"? No other qualifications. Just a knife you would take with you to your cabin for:
* Fishin'
* Huntin'
* Campin'
* Kitchen
* Etc.. Etc..
What say you> Anybody in?
Let me know,
Capt. Chris

Re: Cabin Fever Blues-N-Build - 02/05/24 02:17 PM
How about 4.5" Denmark Special with a little broader blade? Should be a good slicer and general purpose knife.
Or a Yukon skinner with less upsweep? And perhaps start with the 3/16 stock.
I think each gets to a similar place from a different direction.
Edit : I thought this was more a theoretical question, or a fantasy scenario.
For an actual existing model, I'd go with the Denmark Special.

Since you started the thread with a fishing reference ("on the dock"), let's go for something of the fisherman variety.

I'm in! I'm starting to think for my use, and my limited knowledge as well as number of RMK models, the model 25 is it. Great edge geometry for camp, or cabin, kitchen. Obviously excellent on game and works well for other camp chores realistically expected of a knife
Much like the previously mentioned model 10, unfortunately, I don't think there much "building" we can do on either?

Speedy recovery for you and Elizabeth.
I am in for a build.
Tom Flynn
Thanks Tom,
She is doing real well. With regards to this build, I would opt out of the Model #10 for reasons already stated, i.e.: Nothing much to build!
I will have a Model #10 made up to "go with and along with" this build. Perhaps auction it off or something alike.
OK with "all-y'all"?
Stay Sharp,

It's a "Cabin", dude...not a Prison! Jeez...although a like my Little Bears! Keep it up everyone. All part of the show and the admission price remains the same!!

RMK Model #12-6", LITTLE BEAR BOWIE
alternate, RMK Model #7-4 1/2
I shall "try" to remain impartial throughout this process...cause it's "your" build. I'm just the vehicle.
As to "fighter-vs.-others)...A Model #12-6", as I have shown does "not" have the double hilt. It would make a decent all-around user.
A #7, in either blade length, would be excellent as well and (although it would use up 1 option) can be had with the #6 blade grind, making it more "surgical" for kitchen/refined work.
The #22 I posted last just has sooo much standard equipment that it could really be customized (like in a "build") it would serve us well. I posted it as the stainless, nickel silver, thumb notches, crow's beak butt cap are all standard..."& I also posted it as someone referred to a preference of a 3/16" stock knife...
For all 3 posted....just sayin'...

Little Bear wins with the #7 coming in second. OK: "NOW"...what do you prefer for steel?
Stainless costs mo' money and is a little more difficult to sharpen "if" you let it get too dull. No carbon spots or rust to contend with also.
Carbon steel is less Money and is easy to sharpen. If "properly cared for" the staining, spotting, etc. is kept to a minimum. The majority of my "woods" knives are carbon steel..."BUT"...(Here comes that word again...not "all" of them.
If called upon for kitchen duties, I prefer stainless as there is no rust taste to it. Just examples and ideas to hammer out amongst ourselves.

Brass tarnishes if you look at it funny, or even if you do nothing.
NS generally doesn't tarnish, or at least takes a lot longer, unless you do something silly like leave a knife in the sheath.
Of course, there are ways of keeping brass from tarnishing "in dry air", like leaving a very thin layer of Flitz or other cleaner on it.

It was just a question that's all, to see if anyone else thought a C no hone sheath would look better with this larger Model.
Pap
Model "C" sheath is not available on a Little Bear.

B.
Actually would depend on the tones of the wood handle.
But, (a nod to Capt. Chris) if it became a user, the waxed sheath would be nice.

By the narrowest of margins. The black sheath is it. I'll get working on the order. In the meantime: Your thoughts on:
A) Raffle (like the old days)
B) All interested names in the hat and one winner pulled
C) Any "other" suggestions

I don't know if we are in need of an "official" results on this. It looks obvious that the "100 number raffle" gets the nod. If there are no objections, I'll get the figures together for price. etc. and we'll move on.
Let me hear.

I do...
I also know sitin/ridin with Froggy is a full time job!!! Love Him Forever.... but still
13 or so wanting "in" on the raffle/drawing. The only fair way to do this is as follows:
I will post #'s 1 thru 100. Each member (who contributed during the build) will be allowed 5 numbers...to start with. Each # will cost $7.50. You may pay me via:
1) Check or money order
2) Cash
3) Via Paypal
My Paypal address for payments is my email:
captstanaback@aol.com
"AFTER" the intitial selections are made we will offer the balance at the same price. In total ("IF" all numbers are used up..."&" everyone pays), the total $750.00 should cover the cost of the knife and shipping/insurance.
Good Luck & thanks for your input,
Capt. Chris
