Max,

Super knife and a Waltham compass to boot! Any idea when the shop moved the lanyard hole from top to bottom?

Great looking Model 5.

I have 3 Model 5's in the Angier "mode", one of which was featured in Sheldon's book. All the thong holes are on the bottom.

IIRC most if not all thong holes were relocated to bottom as "standard" probably in the early 60's.

I think one reason is with the handle drop, often there was not much material to work with between the tang and the top of the handle.

Max,
Nice Brad! It may be my eyes...(Lord knows: They ain't their best nowadays) but the name etching looks much more recent than the knife's vintage. It could be the photo/angle/lighting/etc... but it looks too light...more like current etchings.
Best, Capt. Chris

Capt.
now that you say that I agree it does look very light. I'll know more when I receive the knife. if so, Mr. Moore may not be the original owner. I remember reading a thread by Scott, in regard to the name being part of the providence of a knife and I am excited to have an older named blade, hope it is just the camera work and it an original owner. when did Randall start etching names??? I believe the unlined throng holes were from around 64 to 72 if I have the dates correct. I see a gray stone in a photo of the sheath (only the edge) so we may know more if it has the yellow writing on it. that would fit the time frame.

I looked at the catalogs on Tunes' page, the 1942 catalog mention inlaid initials, or initials on a silver disk. The 1945 catalog priced etching at $1.50.

that makes since Wally. inlaid on separate material. and the Solingen blade stamps were etched from 55 to 79, Now I don't know if Randall etched them or Solingen. but I imagine that Randall was etching on the blades by that time period.
great info

thanks

received the knife today:

It did have the yellow letters stone. the name is very small and not very deep, so Capt. Chris may be correct about it being a newer etch, letter mic out at .077" tall. JRB sheath, over all the knife is in very good condition, compass looks really good.
