That is a nice piece of wood. I don't recall mesquite being used before "but" you never know. I do know it's one of my favorite grill/smoking woods. Nice find at the Spring sale and you got good advice.

It's not a friendly wood for craftsmen.
I have a chunk that'll eventually end up on a pair of Randall knives.

I would check to see if that grain is running in the right direction. That chunk looks cross grain and that might matter (or not). I'm editing to add it looks correct when I looked closer.
