So Chief, are you leaning toward the Model 4 with a larger blade, like the one you posted on the second page? would that knife have a top edge sharpened, with the embellishments you suggested?

Max,
That knife belongs to Billy.
What I was trying to say was that I wished that blade stayed the same height & thickness but, was a lot longer. Like the Filet does.
But to answer your question, No I'm not leaning towards that with a longer blade.
To me a model 4 with a longer blade would be better served as a fighter with a double hilt, than a fishing knife.
Tune has a thread fighting field knives, when I look at those I don't think wow that would make a good filet knife.
LOL, Sorry so long bet you wish you hadn't asked huh? grin

We could build a Model 22.It has all the bells, buttons and whistles.Just leave off the crows beak and add a wrist thong.Maybe
get a waxed sheath.It ain't a 5 inched but close.

For me the perfect fishing Randall knife would be a 6" Model 7 with a #6 grind, SS blade, Orange micarta handle, black spacers, NS squared hilt, thumb notches and wrist thong. Could even have a 22 crows beak handle. Make it a new Randall Model #33, Filet Knife. Perfection.

This is right Chief. The skin, when properly cooked (fried) is delicious.

Back in the day when Toledo Bend Lake on the Texas and Louisiana border was new, some marinas had fish scaling machines. It was a drum made from expanded metal that spun around with water washing the loosened scales.

Head them, gut them and toss the in the scaler. Take home bluegills, red ears and goggle eyes ready to cook.

Pap described the perfect filet knife, as far as my needs go; would work on everything from bait, bluegill & smallmouth to the 50 lb. plus Cats from the New River and the drum, tuna, blues & dolphin from the NC OBX. Just need Capt. Chris to tie one of his special "filet knife knots" (that he was taught by Bo) in the wrist thong before he ships it to me.
AND, could not agree more with Tom or Chief re: bluegill prep. You rekindled some awfully good memories for me dealing with my great-grandmother's HUGE cast iron skillet (1 of 4 inherited), over a campfire, filled with sizzling bluegills & camping for a week (or 2) with good buddies at 1 of 4 small local "spots".....followed by good buddies & good little children.
I gotta' get back......been way too long.....Thanks.

Tom, I remember those Toledo fish scalers in the mid 1970's and they really worked. Hot grease in a cast iron skillet, cornmeal and salt is all you needed.

How about a #8 old style, we would get a good amount of blade, on both sides and they carry great...?
