So here is the next hurdle I am facing. For those that don't know, Medicare once started, lasts 100 days with full nursing care and all therapies. After that, you are on your own or you need to qualify for Medicaid. For that to happen, you have to move assets in order for the spouse to qualify. This is not an easy thing and thus, I hired an attorney that specializes in such matters. Another problem with Medicaid is once qualified, they only pay for a semi-private room and NO therapy. Lucille isn't in that category yet but I am still in the process of qualifying fir Medicaid. Why do you ask? Well, I am taking her home to Garden Valley on Monday. I feel that I can take KKK e care of her just as good or better, plus she hasn't been home since June 4, of last year. She is excited to g ok home. Medicare and Medicaid will pay for the equipment and most supplies. I will pay extra for any therapy. No problem. We saw an orthopedic surgeon today and he will do Achilles tendon surgery if we get a GP to qualify that she is in shape for it. Also, after 60 days, if she has the surgery and is in the hospital for 3 consecutive days, it starts the Medicare 100 days of skilled nursing and all therapy again. She will have 6 weeks of feet casts on her feet after the surgery. This all sounds complicated and it is. We have not only Medicare but Mutual of Omaha Plan F, supplemental insurance, which is the best, but don't have supplimenta nursing home insurance. If and when you get to the age of Medicare, get the best available supplemental insurance. One more thing to younger members but the best whole life insurance polices you can afford and not term. Since Lucille was in the insurance business for so long, we had numerous whole life policies that had built a lot of cash value over and above the amount of the policy. I was able to borrow from that cash value with no taxes. You are actually borrowing from yourself. Yes, they want you to pay it back, but we just have the dividends go toward the loan. Lucille and I used my first whole life policy cash value as a down payment on our first house! Sorry I chased that rabbit. Please pray that I can handle being her Pal, nurse, attendant and therspist starting this coming Monday.

Pap

Pap,

God Bless you and Lucille and may he give you both strength to get through this. Your decision is sound even if the medical insurance restrictions makes no sense! As good as the hospitals and caregivers are, there is no place like home.

All the best and always in our prayers. You are both lucky to have each other.

Mike

My continued thoughts and prayers to you and Lucille.

I agree with the others, there is no place like home. Having spent 2-4 weeks, a couple times in the hospital, coming home is very uplifting.

Let me clarify one thing. The "moving of assets" is actually a requirement to separate any joint assets into individual assets. So unless both individuals are trying to qualify, separating assets or moving them from one account to another is necessary. Also be aware that you may be required to open a Miller Trust type of checking account as well
