Rick,
Do "not" fill the reservoir! Coat the stones lightly, once cleaned. After honing, I wipe the stones with a paper towel..and I have used mine for "decades" without replacement. The reservoir is designed to "catch" the oils and metal that is being removed with each pass while the actual honing is going on...that's it.

I know someone who is a doctor, cleans his stones in the mri, the magnets rips the metal out...
