Uh-huh wait till you clean it the black comes off, & unevenly at that. i have never seen the underside of a lugged hilt engraved.

Yeah lol everything looks better with a cloudy coat of wax on it.
Ever notice how verdigris forms better on brass?

Who ever said leave it on?
You can buff it off and still get oxidation protection.
Nickel silver is not without care either but slower process. I have brass hardware here for years that look great just a darker patina, nothing green.
