Is that stabilized Osage Orange? I may want it on another personal build.

Pappy:

The bright yellow pieces are definitely not stabilized. They are obviously still very “green”. The darker pieces may or may not be stabilized. They have not been turned and I think that you want to mill Bois ‘d Arc as close to the final size as possible before stabilizing it on account of its density and hardness.

I’m thinking the same as you about using some on a personal build. I’d like to do a Smith Bowie with a large (thick) Bois ‘d Arc commando handle.

I have some big Bois ‘d Arc trees on my place. I know of a sawmill that will saw them up if I can get them to him still green.

I also have some big Black and Honey Locust trees. They make some very interesting lumber also.

If it will ever dry up around here and I can get some time to do it, I would like to take a trailer load of Bois ‘d Arc, Locust, and Cedar logs to the sawmill.

They say that great minds think alike!

There was/is an old homestead about half way down to Pittsburg Landing in Idaho County from the 1860's. One of the great great grandsons was a good friend of mine that had a jet boat back in the 1970's. When we would drive by this grove of Osage Orange, I asked him about those trees. Being a graduate forester I recognized them. Long story short, I cut one down and kept the 10" diameter log for 6-7 years and sold it at a Boise Gun/knife show. In the mean time, I knew Bill Bagwell from Louisiana Tech and he made me a skinning knife with Osage Orange handle. I sold it to Rhett along with my original Model 1, and a Model 8 when I was down and out. A few years later, when I was back on my feet, I tried to buy them back, but Rhett had already sold them and didn't know to whom.
