In Arkansas there was hickory, oak, Osage Orange and walnut. Personally an Osage Orange would definitely be awesome and unusual.

Also Honey Locust, which can be tough as a nail (like Osage Orange).

Bro I'm like you about Brass.I polished to much while in the military.
I don't know what type of of wood wa on the handle.Just like I don't know if it was originally forged in Louisiana or Arkansas.
Seems like nobody else does either.

If everyone is OK with it we can get the Captain to pull from his stash or find Some cool wood like the Osage Pappy mentioned, subject to the Captains approval of course.
I'll spring for it so it doesn't mess with the funds.....we usually don't build the big boys might as well go all out if we can.

Walnut is probably the best choice, historically speaking. You can find some gorgeous figured Walnut too.
