Back in the late 60s,my brother in law had a mine up in Whitehorse,Yukon Territory.

One morning he went out to start up the truck after disconnecting the engine heaters and started down the road. all four tire came off the rims. They were frozen solid. Temp was minus 80.

That spring.he moved to Peachland,BC much warmer there!!!!

I had a similar thing happen to me in Fairbanks. I had winterized my Chevy pickup but no one told me about needing to change my tire tube to natural rubber. It was about 60 below and I had flown from the Coldfoot Camp to Fairbanks for my 2 weeks off. I made it 3 blocks and lost all 4 tire tubes, because they were butyl and cracked in the cold. I made it a block to Sears and they had 4 rubber tubes left, I was lucky! Then, after replacing my tire tube, I made it another block and lost my fan belts, they broke. In the spring, I had to change out all my shock absorbers because the pistons inside the shocks were buytl too. Living in extreme cold takes some doing.

Wintered over in Antarctica in 68-69 as a member of the Navy's Operation Deep Freeze supporting science research.
We observed a record low of 121.5 below zero F that year.
One trick was throwing a pot of coffee outside and hearing the crack as it froze before hitting the ground.
Zero humidity and we used Corn Huskers Oil to keep our skin from cracking. We kept the inside temp around 55 degrees F and it felt comfortable.

121.5 below zero??? Yipes!!!!

I haven't heard of Corn Huskers lotion for a long time. I wonder if it is still made.

One of my in laws was stationed up at Whitehorse,YT and was transferred down to Dawson Creek(?) and the trip was about 600 miles. It was 1954 and they used coal oil for motor oil being the temps were -50. No synthetic oils back then.

Common practice back then was to pack some copper chain and if you broke down,you threw the chain over the telegraph wires to short them out. The repair crew knew about where the short was and sent out a rescue party.

I won't complain when it gets near zero here after hearing the above stories.

I remember...way back in the early 80's....it got down to 8 in these parts!!!...water line froze!!

67 below in Coldfoot, AK was the coldest we had, but it lasted a week. Nothing ran. When it warmed up to 20 below, you felt like short sleeve weather. Lol.

A lot of folks think that all over Georgia is hot. Go up to Ft.Benning in the winter....things are not so hot there.

I went through Ft.Benning in Oct'64 and it was HOT for sure. Just in time to prep me for 'Nam.

Now when the ice melts up in Alaska,I guess then it is time for the mosquitoes to come out.............in force????

There used to be a magazine called The Alaskan Sportsman, now called The Alaskan Magazine, and they had a big article one spring in the late 60's about skeeters in AK. It seems that renowned mosquitoe scientists, conducted a world wide study on their populations. An area 100 miles north of Fairbanks won the title of have the most mosquitoes per square mile than any other area in the entire world. One scientist bared his back for 1 full minute and his buddy wiped and crushed the skeeters on his back, and it was all bloody.

I have been a subscriber to Alaska Magazine for many years. I really like it.

Up by the cabin in Maine,right on the Canadian border. When ice breaks up at the lake by late May,that is when the black flies come out in hordes. Nasty little things they are. Leave welts that take weeks to heal.

They are gone by late July. Sleet starts in late August and ice forms in early October.

I scattered my wife's ashes on the lake's edge overlooking her native Canada. Used to be her favorite fishing spot.
