There’s several possibilities in my arsenal that I love to shoot, all zeroed and ready to roll, but I always feel most confident with the Rem. 700 BDL with the Leupold 3x9 in 30-06. It just does not miss what I’m hunting. And, as I hand load everything, I’m certain that’s with such a wide range of bullet weights I’m able to choose from 125gr-220gr without hesitation depending on whatever variables.
To encourage my son to learn my belief that you only need one shot I provided him a TC Contender carbine in 300 Whisper for his first high powered rifle. The low/no recoil using those same 125-220gr bullets allowed him to shoot lots of range rounds to increase his own confidence.
To date he has fired 4 times at game resulting in two nice whitetail bucks and two wild turkey head shots.....all brought home. What an easily loaded, incredible round.

This photo is on my website, I believe. If not, most certainly on my business card. "Hill Country" custom bolt-action rifle, to include:
* Remington #700 long action
* McMillan M-40 A-1 stock
* Devcon-Titanium bedding
* Lilja natch-grade barrel (stainless)
* Oxide-finish and matte blued metal process
* Timney Trigger
* Conetrol mounts & rings
* Fuginon 3.5-10 x 50mm riflescope (with BDC)
* Caliber? 30-06 Springfield...OF COURSE!
BTW: 11 pint whitetail scored 146 (ish)
Stay sharp, Capt. Chris

Capt,
Nice white tailed buck. Looks to be about 175 lbs???

A few years ago,a bow hunter harvested a 305 white tailled buck just ix miles from my home at a state forest.

Haul that out of the woods and it is uphill.....both ways!!!

I grew up reading things by Jack O'Conner about hunting so I went with the 270. Still a great shooter. I had a Sako that was a tack diver, I gave that to one of my grandsons who has become a avid hunter. He doesn't take it out much he says it is to nice to be out in the weather. He doesn't know what I put it through in 50 seasons. I also like the 308 and have it in a LR.

Capt:

I have admired that picture since the first time I saw it.

I love the 30.06 and have shot mine since 1970.

But I got a Seekins SP10 in .308 a couple years ago and I sure like shooting it.

It is super accurate and a lot easier on my shoulder!

Coach

PS I have a Leopold VariX III 3.5 x 10 with 50mm on both.

That's a dandy buck Duke. I've taken some nice mule deer bucks over the years, but only juvie white tail bucks that are around my place. That buck is a classic.
