I hope that the insertion of the photos has been done correctly.
This is a my friend's 12-9 (from the 80s, I think) that I would like to buy.
Unfortunately the father kept it in the sheat hanging on the wall, and the light darkened the micarta handle.
only part of the handle remained clear, as you can see.
I have two questions:
1) can the handle be returned to its original light color? how could this be done?
2) what value could this knife have?

Thanks in advance for the answers you can give me.
Andrea

Hello Andrea, and welcome from a fellow European!

The question about value I would gladly leave to others here who are much more knowledgeable.

The question about the darkened Micarta I can answer as a knife maker of 42 years. You can only remove the darker color by removing some of the material, and it depends on the Micarta how deep the darkening has gone. In my experience it can easily be 2 mm. I don't know if that would be desirable, to me it would not be. What's more: you cannot keep the material from darkening, because it darkens because of UV light.

Personally I would expose the lighter part of the handle to sunlight, so the lighter part becomes as dark as the darker part. My 2 cents.

A beautiful Sportsman's Bowie by the way.

You can send it to a knife maker and have them sand it down. It will darken again, but you can make sure it does it evenly. I had a scrim removed from the pictured knife. It turned out well I think. I was lucky to get Don Hedrick to do it.

Thanks Gert,
also I think it’s the only way.
But what do you think about a scrimshaw in the lighter part of the handle? Something like a trout that jumps out of the water ...

Eric,
who sanded the handle did a very great job, beautiful knife!
My fear is that if the dark color is 2mm deep I risk to change the shape of the handle loosing the original profile of all the knife; and also its value.
Thanks for you reply!
Andrea

A good Scrimshaw is always nice. But I think the lighter part will darken over time if exposed to light.
