That got fixed in 1958 when the International Committee on Weights and Measures decided that the international yard equals 0.9144 meter, making the inch exactly 2.54mm.

Basically, our non-metric unit of length is based on the metric system.

does the tape read in tenth's....is a "foot" marked at "10" units formally known as inches????
My measuring tapes, for appraisals are graduated in tenth's.....that way it can be loaded into a computer program, and easily read by the client....I had a young trainee once....she was looking at the tape, and scratching her head....she looked at me, and said...."I always thought there were 12 inches in a foot"....she was kind of cute, and I could see this was troubling for her....she adapted well...
