I’m looking for a .44 mag. 4” or less barrel.
S&W 629 Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan Colt Anaconda
Any thoughts or opinions?
Thanks!

Coach, May I suggest the Ruger Alaskan in 44 mag??
I have one and it is superb. My bear buster loads consist of a 290 gr lead swc bullet over 18 gr of 2400.
Recoil is there but not bad as the grips are hand filling.
Typical of all Rugers, built like a tank and well made.
Also a Diamond D leather chest rig is a nice holster combination for it.

Wayne:
That’s the one I’m leaning toward right now.
The lock issues on the 629 bothers me. And, I can’t get less than 6” on the Colt barrel.
I have 2 Alaskans near me. $1250 + tax on a brand new one and $900 cash for a used one.
I’m gonna keep looking another week or so.

I went from the .44 mag to a 10mm Glock 20SF for a number of reasons. First, the noise and recoil, and only 5 or 6 rounds, not to mention the time to re sight after a shot. My first S&W 29 was a 4" that was MagnaPorted. Shot great, and at the range with ear muffs, very reasonable, but in the woods, without ear muffs, I was deaf after one shot. I got to where if I shot it without muffs or ear plugs, I put my left hand trigger finger in my right ear. Don't get me wrong, I still love and have some wheel guns, including my 627 Performance.357, and a couple of Model 10's, a 22lr and a 22Mag. But my go to woods pistol is my Glock Model 20SF 10mm, 15+1 ,and a Diamond D Guide Chest holster with extra mag. Way less recoil, way less recovery, way less muzzle blast, and way more fire power. To each their own, but for big fire power and overall pleasant shooting, my choice is the Glock 10mm.

Coach, If you get the used Ruger Alaskan,it is still covered by the excellent factory warranty.
Diamond-D leather pretty much has a wait for their holsters and if you want,I can send you my Diamond D rig for your Alaskan to use until you get one.
If you lived close by,I would let you try out my Alaskan.

Thanks Pap. Good points!
But I've got my reasons for wanting a .44 Mag.

Both were GONE before I got home today. Oh well, I’ll keep looking!
Thanks for the offer, Wayne! Let me find the weapon first.

Coach, I have said before and will say it again.............you wait............you lose.
Hope you find an Alaskan soon. Try Davidsons they may have a few for you. There is a huge distributor in Louisiana,I forget the name and they are a large Ruger distributor.
When you get it,let me know and I will send you the Diamond D rig to use until you get yours.
Wayne

I found one. It will be here Monday.
Now, if I can just find some ammo! That may be harder to find.
Wayne,
My FFL has a Diamond D chest holster for an Alaskan. I told him to hold it for me til Monday. He said that he has had it for a couple of years.
