My favorite 44 mag load is a 290 grain cast SWC over 17.5 grains of 2400.

Shoots real well in my Ruger Alaskan.

I have only handloaded .44 special rounds for Cowboy Action shooting. They would be a little anemic for this beast! I will need to step up my game for when I take this hunting.

Next on my list is a holster to help balance off the 12-9 Bowie…

I love the .44 special....it can be loaded to do about anything!!

Rocky,
I have two Charter Bulldogs in 44 spl. One I made somewhat like their latest Boomer model. 2 1/2 inch bbl,magna-ported and bobbed hammer. Did NOT cut away the front of the trigger guard like a Fitz Special though.

The other is a Heller Commemorative.

Elmer Keith saw the true value of the 44 spl. I still think it is a great cartridge.

anyway I do love the .44 special cartridge!!
I've got that Lew Horton, and a 5 shot stainless Smith that I cannot remember the model # of...and am too lazy to go down, and see....

From this article...it is obvious that gunsmiths over the years have duplicated Fitz's modifications.

And those duplicates probably should not be called Fitz Specials...after all, Fitz did nothing to those guns.

Jesus Larry...it's a very complimentary article, and I doubt any of the owners of the "modified" to look like a "Fitz Special" guns are concerned about what they are called...I seriously doubt that Fitz would care anyway...what ever state he's in today....

Rocky,
Yep,I saw that article. I have an acquaintance who inherited Col. Rex Applegate's Fitz Special. Classic piece.

A number of firearms notables have had Fitz Specials, one being Jelly Bryce formerly of Oklahoma City PD then the FBI.

Rocky--

I know where you are coming from.

Just thinking, like Armand Swenson, for example, innovated several mod's to the 1911, but nobody who continues to make up guns using his mod's would ever think to call their products a "Swenson." Even his ambidextrous safety is not called a "Swenson safety."

I would have to go back to the Fitz article, but I suspect that such guns mod'd by subsequent gunsmiths do not carry their signatures...and if a buyer might somehow be led to believe they were buying an original done by Fitz they might not be able to confirm it...probably paying up because it is called a Fitz Special.
