Wayne, you are correct on being equipped with proper equipment. I'm sure we have nothing compared to Northern States. When we have a Snow event, it shuts everything down. I'm sure people who get snow all the time get tired of it. They activated the National Guard this round. A cabin in Maine, I'm jealous!!

Lori,
The cabin in Maine is hard on the Canadian border. Cabin, out front is the lake, other side...Canada.

I scattered my wife's ashes at her favorite spot on water's edge. That way she is in sight of her native homeland.

Sleet starts around first of September, ice starts to skim on the lake by early October and ice out is not until about the 2nd or 3rd week in May.

Just in time.............for the black flies to come out in hordes.

Nasty bite takes about two weeks to heal. The black flies last from that time until about late July.

Temps in the dead of winter have gotten as low as minus 40.

Lake water temperature even in August is about 55......maybe.

You forgot to mention mosquitoes. We share them with anyone who would like to try and see how they “work”. We think of mosquitoes as helping our bodies to make new blood after the mosquitoes take out a cup or so!

Pappoy,
Ahh,yes, mud season, when the ice and snow go............out comes the mud!!!

Rod,
Yes,I think the Maine State Bird" is that pesky mosquito!! I have heard tales of folks being carried away by them to be devoured later.

Key to it is that you wear a head net, long sleeves and gloves while fishing and if possible get out to where a breeze is blowing.

Not quite -40°, I think the low for this one was around 0°. I can't find any pictures from colder hangs, but -21° is my coldest....so far.

What's the best winter sleeping bag? The old time Arctic flyers all had a Wood's 5 Star down rectangular bag, that haven't been made since the early 70's, but still the standard. A close second, is the HD Eddie Bauer extra long rectangular down bag with the hood and fleece insert. That's what I have and it's nearly 50 years old and still the best, as far as I'm concerned. The removable fleece insert can be washed without messing with the down bag itself. I found 2 at an auction, with inserts, and bought them both for $60/ each, a huge bargain. Washed the inserts and gave them to my 2 grandsons. Told them to never sell or lend them to anyone, they were impossible to find. If you do ever run into one, don't pass it up.

I feel the best sleeping bags are from

https://www.wiggys.com/
They are made in Grand Junction CO, USA and I have not been cold in mine

I'll echo what Peter says, Wiggy's bags..

I also have a Butler bag, nice but extremely heavy for packing in, for me anyway..
