That is not a joke!
The only way to "own" and "protect" your information is to keep it from being downloaded by Microsoft or Apple or others against your wishes and without your consent. And not take advantage of any free or paid-for online storage.
After a hard drive failure on a quite new computer cost me $1600 to have some of it recovered, I went to off-computer storage on two solid-state hard drives, with routine backups to at least three other devices. No way to lose all of it at one time. And nothing except Temp files on the computer hard drive.
That does not mean that Bigger Brother can't tap in somehow, but at least the information is not dependent on people and systems who are unreliable and not trustworthy. Consider how so many of the big companies listen in and collect info about us to use for their own purposes.
