Squirrel season opened Sept 1st in my state so each week I will go on a squirrel safari until end of February.

My usual go to piece is my old Savage/Stevens Model 24 22lr/410 O/U.

I also,on occasion use my Benjamin Discovery pcp 22 but prefer the Model 24 most of the time.

Hunter orange is required so I will probaly look like a big ornage pumpkin sitting on a rock wall to the animals.

For my knife is m very old,Model 8 (Old Style).

Top dog, sounds like a good setup for sure with either weapon.
Enjoy the hunt and the feast following!

Shoot,
I just returned from the "squirrel safari". Seems there are more squirrels in my front yard than the forest.

I did, however, get some responses to my calls but did not see them.

It is usually after the season closes they all come out.

I was 14 when Dad bought me my first rifle...a Marlin 39A. For the remainder of my high school years I put lots of squirrels on the table - good eatin'!! And the car antennas of all the hunters would fill up with squirrel tails.

Now I'm surrounded by city squirrels, they tear up the garden, I can't shoot 'em in the city, and I wouldn't eat one on a bet. Who could guess what kind of city crap they have eaten. Those country squirrels lived on acorns, nuts, and whatever seeds and grains they might find...made for real tasty game. You'd pay premium for livestock fed like that.

Jim,
A Marlin 39A?? Wow! That is great for a first rifle. Hopefully you still have it. I guess after many thousands of rounds it is broken in and not worn out??

Yeah,no telling what city squirrel may eat. Just like pigeons, ones out in the pastures and field harvested are quite edible but who knows what they consume in the city.

If you have a high powered suppressed air rifle usually in 22 caliber, you may sometimes offer to help a farmer or cattleman rid his area of pigeons/starlings.

Be sure to use nonlead pellets so not to contaminate any feed.

It seems that during squirrel season, none are to be seen but as the season closes and I am out hunting coyotes, the squirrels are all over the place.
