You don't just "lash" it to a pole, at least I don't. You find a larger limb (or whatever), "slot" the end to allow for the shaft to "surround" 2 sides of the knife's handle and "then" lash/attach it, via paracord (or leather's even better) to the knife. Works well...(I've tried it)!
Hope this helps,
Capt. Chris

Hi, everyone's experience is different. I like and use lanyards. I use the option Col. Rex Applegate recommends. Thumb through lanyard with the knife to the back of the hand, flip your hand over and grasp the handle. I also like the spear knife option. That's why I purchased a Byrd copy extension.
Getting back to the main topic, I absolutely love the 3" number 10, and I own several, YMMV, regards, Mike

As more than a few of might guess, I have more than just one of each for these categories. I'll post a few, as this topic continues along...the purpose is to show y'all different options and considerations.
"If" you should like to see anything, in particular, just post up and I'll see what I can do.
Thanks for getting this thread off to a great start!

My favorite small one. Nr. 6 Steak knife. Not only great in the restaurant, but also for every kind of European game, from hares and rabbits to wild pigs and deer.

Here with stag handle, nickel silver guard an aluminum crow's beak butt cap.

My favorite Big One. Nr. 14 Attack. A comfort to have with you.
Here with nickel silver forward curved guard and custom brown canvas micarta Border Patrol full tang handle.

For the small knife, my choice would be my 5-4:

For the large knife, it would be my Model 15:

Where do the model 27's fit into this discussion? I have a mini and I would think a full size should pair nicely with it. Belt and neck knife combo?
