Boomer, you remember that brass blackening stuff in a little bottle you got at the PX, to touch up rank or belt buckles, or whatever? Anyway, that's what it looks like to me.
Wally, I think Birchwood-Casey offered a product in a 2 oz bottle, called "Brass Black". We used it on replica custom-made longrifles to add "patina" to the brass furniture on them. Regular liquid gun blue would also blacken brass.

I was wondering the same thing Wally. Just wasn’t sure if the shop would do something like that on an order back then. I still use this stuff from time to time and it works well on brass. Don’t know that it would work on a SS nut though. Might have to experiment some.
