It's been my experience, Larry, that there appears to be no difference as to edge "holding ability" one tother. The difference is in re-sharpening (shaping) the blade...carbon is faster-n-easier. I think the preponderance of opinion and preference for carbon stems from it's ability in starting a fire. Of course...that being said...I carry heavy-duty, waterproof matches also. It is my opinion that the majority of "stainless advocates" deem it so...."only" because of it's ability to resist rust-n-tarnish. My opinion, Capt. Chris
