When I worked a big pipeline project inear Portland, Oregon, I had to visit with many rural landowners, most had dogs, and not on a leash. Many of us had stories about being run back to the pickup truck, being chased by a resident dog I asked the Gas company how their meter readers cope with that issue. We had a big meeting with all my project people to discuss that problem. The Safetydirector for the Gas company said they tried everything with little success until they hired a dog psychology expert. He showed a film where he had numerous different breeds of attack dogs come at him. He used a spring loaded umbrella, and opened it up when they got close. It made a big Pop when it opened that stopped the dog's charge, then used the umbrella itself to move wherever the dog moved. The dogs would finally give up on their aggressiveness. Once we all were equipped with sturdy spring loaded umbrellas, we had no more issues with aggressive dogs.
