Not all animal attacks are wild animals...

In the "civilized" world, dog attacks are too common, and without calling out any particular breed...some of them are bred to do damage.

People are attacked by dogs much more often than by wild animals.

Capt. Chris--

You were prepared "just in case," and had a good outcome.

Lucky bear.

Larry,
You are right htere, dog bites are more common than wild animal attacks.

Years ago, after I would pump iron,I would run a mile.

This one morning,as I was jogging down the road,I heard the ominous sounds of dog nails on the pavement and turned around to see a large Pit Bull coming down the road after me.

I faced the dof and it stopped. I walked backwards towards my house still facing the dog but it was making false chafrges at me.

As I got to the house,I was worried when I turned my back to open the front door that it would close the distance and bite me.

I pulled out my North American Arms 22 mini revolver from my waist nad holster just as the dog was starting to close in. I fired one round into the ground away from the dog.

The dog stopped mid charge and ran away. I never saw that dog again.

Top Dog--

Both of you were lucky.

Not to "pick on the breed," but anyone interested can find info about them.

I suspect that the .22 might not have stopped a determined attack by one...unless it was a lucky shot.

Other breeds are also dangerous when they attack. Owners are torn when the animals they love go violent. And sometimes they or family members are the victims.

Sometimes, owners are the problem....

I will send you a PM about one experience.

Larry,
Interesting story about your encounter.

I often have said that it is not the dog but the owner that is the cause of the problem.

An excellent defensive tool for those folks who cannot carry heat or a blade is the FAST STRIKE Defensive TOOL.

It was developed by a father/daughter team out in Montana.

It can pretty much be carried concealed or even out in the open anywhere w/o causing any attention.

I have given a few to women doctors, teachers and relatives.

When I worked a big pipeline project inear Portland, Oregon, I had to visit with many rural landowners, most had dogs, and not on a leash. Many of us had stories about being run back to the pickup truck, being chased by a resident dog I asked the Gas company how their meter readers cope with that issue. We had a big meeting with all my project people to discuss that problem. The Safetydirector for the Gas company said they tried everything with little success until they hired a dog psychology expert. He showed a film where he had numerous different breeds of attack dogs come at him. He used a spring loaded umbrella, and opened it up when they got close. It made a big Pop when it opened that stopped the dog's charge, then used the umbrella itself to move wherever the dog moved. The dogs would finally give up on their aggressiveness. Once we all were equipped with sturdy spring loaded umbrellas, we had no more issues with aggressive dogs.

Scott,
OK,you know me too well. I actually charged after the dog and bit it. Probably gave it rabies too!!!

Pap,
I have heard about the "open umbrella" defense. I have seen a defensive umbrella advertised in some "gunzines" some time back.

I don't know if it is still on the market or not.

Last week I returned from a week long trip up to my cabin in northern Maine.

Two mornings a cow moose came up to (but not on) the front deck. I came out each time and we stared at each other for a few moments then the moose strolled away

From what I understand, more folks get attacked/trampled by moose then bear attacks.
