It's been my experience, Larry, that there appears to be no difference as to edge "holding ability" one tother. The difference is in re-sharpening (shaping) the blade...carbon is faster-n-easier.
I think the preponderance of opinion and preference for carbon stems from it's ability in starting a fire. Of course...that being said...I carry heavy-duty, waterproof matches also.
It is my opinion that the majority of "stainless advocates" deem it so...."only" because of it's ability to resist rust-n-tarnish.
My opinion,
Capt. Chris

Update: It's 6-3, thus far, with carbon leading the charge....just sayin'. I'll give it until Sunday evening. I'm surprised no more responses...

Captain--

I like both steels...but...

If looking for a knife that I don't want to develop freckles or outright rust, go for stainless.

I was glad to see RMK move on from the O1 forgings for the Sergeant's Special that they had struck and had in stock for Stoddard's. Every one I owned developed freckles or worse. Maybe because of the lot that those O1 forgings came from???

Which reminds me that I need to dig out the one I still have and see if it is OK.

With RMKs...I have too many favorites, can't own or use them all.

And I will be happy with whichever steel the players select for this build.

Larry

Stainless is painless
For maintenance that is.

I'm "slammed" this morning as my A/C tech is here and I have no air, while his maintenance is done...about 3-4 hours. Is someone would be so kind as to tally the blade steel preference, I would be most thankful.
Thanks,
Capt. Chris

I'll tell ya'...It's "slow-going" on this build. The final count is:
A) Carbon-7 votes
B) Stainless-4 votes
We're done. Let's move on, thanks.
