..although a SFG suits the Sergeant well.

Good morning members,
As I've said, many times, I don't care "what" we build....& that still holds true..."BUT"...if I can add, subtract or in someway benefit (or not) the decision-making, I will "put it out there". Here's a few thoughts about final options....or not.
Things to consider:
A) Proper grip
B) Compass adds-n-nots
C) Usages
D) General purposes (others)

A camp knife should (obviously) perform a ton-a-tasks. It should feel good in the hand..."either hand"...in multiple applications.
Is should feel "natural" in your hand. It should be able to perform without interfering with itself.
Duties to consider (& I'm never going to be able to list everything here) can be:
* Meal preparations
* Cuttin' stuff up (inside)
* Cuttin' stuff up (outside)
* Possible batoning (kindling, tent pegs, etc.)
* Skining, Gutting, etc.
These, of course, are just things "I" use a knife for. Even though I sleep in a "pre civil war" huge home at the hunting camp, I still have to make tent pegs for portable blinds, wind screens, etc. etc.
* If you members were to study this, ever-so-limited list, You can see why "I" (not sayin' youze guys) would avoid a SFG handle. Pleasant to look at, shows off the wood grain, etc. etc. still limits, cramps and fells poorly, when using to cut "upwards", it would not be my choice. If you cut a rope, twine, etc. you will use your camp knife to cut upwards...often.
Bradford Angier took this into consideration on his choice of handle shapes, i.e.: "Standard"! That doesn't mean it was the only choice. Commando or Border patrol would feel correct in your hand in most positions.
I carry a Scottish (Dalvy) compass, have 2 I phones on me with compass capabilities, and would not see a need for compass in the handle of my "Camper". "Hunter"? Different scenario on a hunter.
I would also opt for a butt cap. Full tang construction...for "me"...would make more sense (especially if you have to baton) etc. as strength would be a most-desired concern.
A wrist thong can be handy for some circumstances other than a knife fight. It may be your choice. Well hell: It's "ALL" your choice.
We have 2 options left. Obviously the RMK shop's standard handle shape would still leave 2 more..."BUT"...(There it is)...so would the choice of the Commando shaped handle as it is a N/C option.
These are just my thoughts and not meant to influence this build, just comments from an old fart that, actually, "USES" his Randalls.
Let's keep the "idea juices" flowing here, thanks.
Stay Sharp,
Capt. Chris

Captain's points considered.

I would opt for (A) BP handle with butt cap: Shows off the hopefully attractive ironwood.

Or (B) Standard handle with butt cap.

Another thought...but we are way beyond this...would be a Model 15 CDT set up in a similar package.

Larry

1/2 inch longer blade. Thumb notches would be an option.

I like these suggestions from The Captain:
... a) butt cap (full tang) duralumin, thin, rounded
... b) border patrol shape
... c) forget compass

How many options does it take for the butt cap to be done like this?
