The Randall Model 5 is my absolute favorite model. I'm not much on wood handle's, but this is a beautiful piece of exhibition grade ironwood. I have more pictures to post of different model 5 which I will do later this week.

My favorite Model 5 is this one that was owned by the famous shooting expert , D. Lee Braun. I purchased this knife in 1987 from Nate Posner of the San Francisco Gun Exchange who was selling the Braun gun collection at the time. This was the 34th Randall that I purchased in my short Randall collecting effort at that time. Braun was a marksman for the Remington Arms Company. (I would appreciate any more comments on Braun here if you have them)

$200.00 was the price and this was two years before we started the Randall Knife Society in 1989. The knife has a seven inch blade and the sheath is Heiser.

Hey Ron, what year was this knife made?

Regards,

Rhett

The butt cap has a piece added to it by the original owned that looks to be a type of epoxy with a Z made out of copper in it. The Z is for his last name. He also made a handle for another of his knives, a bayonet recovered off of Iwo Jima during the time the Navy & USMC were raising the flag.

Very nice, tell me more about the butt cap, love the nickel silver on the old ones...

I would like to thank everyone who has posted/commented today. All of the knives are fantastic and it's great to see members show such zeal in expressing their views on a favorite model.
And a very special thank you to Rhett. As we all know Rhett has had some health problems and it's good to see a post from him.

Hey Rhett,

It's the earliest 5 I've ever seen and drop dead gorgeous to boot! From Gaddis we know that Bo started working on his postwar field knife lineup in the summer of '45 starting with the Model 3, then the 4 then the 7 then the 5 (if I remember right - I don't have access to my "Bible" right now). If indeed this was the order it's hard to say exactly when he got around to the 5. IMO the very first stag handles after the war had two pins before one was dropped and this happened very quickly. Your's has just the one. Now look at the blade grind: The 5 was a modified fighter, but it still retained the same profile (removal of the top finger cutout nothwithstanding). There is no exaggerated "hump" in the spine as you would see in a late WWII fighter. By this evidence I don't think it's a 2nd half '45 knife. The sheath is the tell on the "no later than" side: Mr. Gaddis has documented the logo snaps were introduced in ~ June of '46. Bottom line is I think it was made in the 1st 6 months of 1946. However I could be off by +/- 5 years as this sh%$ is no exact science

Best
