I have a two part question. I have heard that Tony numbers his first nine knives of a paticular pattern and handle material, then on following knives the numbers are omitted, is this correct?

Also, does Reese do the same thing?

You almost got it right. Here is the numbering system as I understand it:

The first knife made of any pattern is now stamped "Prototype". Let's say a 3.5" pattern is upsized to a 4" pattern, even that first 4" version would be stamped "Prototype".

Subsequent knives of a pattern would be stamped starting with "0" and then "1 thru 9" for following knives of the same handle material. Knives aren't numbered past "9".

Does that help? If I'm wrong, Tony might step in here and set us straight.

I’d say there are some discrepancies here and there….and it also depends on which pattern you are talking about.

The “prototype” stamp was introduced maybe 2002-2003…so the older patterns start with a No.0….and way before that they started with No.1…kinda of a “figure it out as you go” kinda deal.

But for the most part you got it right
and I'd say Reese does the same

I think Reese uses a 0 mark for prototypes...

...And just to make things interesting, Tony told me today that he only series numbered the handle types on the Lockback Whittler.

Well, in a similar vein, I have “007” on my buttocks. Actually, just one “0” and one “7” tattooed on the left and right cheeks, respectively. The other “0” is only visible during a full moon.
