Tom and Dan,

Thanks for taking the time to post your Model 19's. They are both beautiful knives and excellent examples of RMK craftsmanship.

ENJOY!

Never made it to blade and you guy just keep posting some killer looking 19's, so I felt compelled to feed my fix. Funny how tastes change over the years, models that never did much for me have now become some of my most prized possesions including the 19.

Rob,

That's a good looking model 19. That handle will only get better looking with age. Well done!

Best,
Warren

Rob,

That's a very nice RMK 19.
I like the handle and the wood is beautiful.
Thanks for taking the time to post.

Thanks fellas, I was waiting for a super stag one to come along and ended up with this instead, the wood is Lignum Vitae, pretty tuff stuff from what I've read, never seen any up close before but was very pleasantly surprised when it arrived...

Rob,
That's a good-looking #19, but that wood is not Lignum Vitae. Lignum Vitae is much more olive in color (no exceptions, that I have ever seen) and has a close-pattern grain, similar to herringbone. It also has a smell that gives a hint of vanilla. I'll post a pic of a Randall made up with lignum vitae.
Best, Capt. Chris

You would probably know better than anyone Capt' but I don't know, the belly of my handle appears similar in grain to yours, maybe a tad darker but you may have a AA grade vs maybe mine's a b grade piece, I do have some swirls on the sides with some great lines on top that go into a small knot. I googled Lignum Vitae and all kinds of photos and info pop up, different shades and colors. There's also "Argentine Lignum Vitae" which some sell as the real LV. I didn't know Lignum Vitae is the most dense of all the woods in the world, it won't float and it 3 times harder than oak. Surprisingly it's used for bearings, rollers and even underwater propeller bushings. Mine does have a slight hint of vanilla also, cool stuff, thanks.

The matrix of your wood appears to take on the look of walnut, olive wood or perhaps a burl, but the grain does not appear to be anything similar to lignum vitae. (Some of the lignum vitae installed originally in the Hoover dam is supposedly still there). regardless of the wood, that #19 has an extremely cool handle! Good luck with it.
Best, Capt. Chris
P.S. I have a small piece of "Curly Koa" which has similar properties to your handle. I'll post some, if I "EVER" get a break in this friggin' weather!!...CCS
