My 500 gr cast bullet load is with 62 grs BP,recoil is not bad at all because of the weight of the Shiloh Sharps.
I have never used jacketed or smokeless powder loads in the Sharps as I feel that the 45/70 was originally a BP cartridge.

I would imaging that the Marlin 45/70 lever action rifles would have a bot of recoil with some of the loads available out there.

I had a Browning Model 1886 in 45-70 and with the 405 gr. bullet, you definitely felt it.

Pappy, Ialso have a Brownig 1886. Have you tried reduced someless loads. I am going on a hog hunt and I was considering taking the 1886

I used to have a Marlin Guide Gun in .45/70 and the Remington 405 grain load was easy recoiling to me.

Sold my Browning 1886 a few years ago, when I went totally with the TC Encore system. If I was looking for a good hog gun, the Marlin 35 Remington would be up there. The 45-70 Guide gun also looks interesting. My Glock 20 10mm on a dog hunt would be my first choice, with a Diamond D chest holster.

The latest Outdoor Life has a nice article on the 45-70, including the big 3 lever action makers: Winchester 1886, Henry Steel Wildlife, and Marlin 1895 Modern Hunter. While it is The most expensive, by far, the Marlin comes setup with all of my wants. Recoil pad, Peep sight, Cerakoted metal, Picatinny rail, Oversized lever loop, crossbolt safety, 7 1/2 lbs., 17 1/2" barrel, and $2,195.00 purchase price.

I will agree with you on that Marlin,but before you put down your hard earned money on it,check it out carefully.

Since Remington took over Marlin a couple of years ago,some things have changed and not for the better.

A month ago I contacted them to take my old Marlin 336/35 Remington in for repair. They first said that the serial number I supplied them did not exist. I double checked and sent it (the number) back to them again and their reply was "we no longer service that gun". A Marlin 336 that is still being made???

So,I have a feeling that things might not be the same with Marlin.
