John_Nugent Knife Enthusiast Registered: 10/01/05 Posts: 1089 Loc: Indiana	After a little thinking and being around a lot of people that know nothing about knives I think the name “Gent’s Knives” is a bit misleading. They should be called “lady and Gent’s Knives” From the BoseKnives Catalog a Gent’s Knife is this. This is a 3" single (ATS-34) blade trapper, Green Bone, double bomb shield. There are a lot of these in circulation. I heave heard stores that Tony would send out 10 of these at time to certain dealers. The price at that time was $175 and they would sell like hot cakes. When I came on the scene they cost a little more, not much luckily. Reese was selling them for $50 less and I was able to purchase this little guy for $175. Actually I think the “Gent’s Knife” has evolved into any knife (one or two blade) that’s 3” or under. So a Gent’s Knife could be a Trapper, SwayBack,…CoffinJack…and the Peanut. Tony had a drawing when I went to my first Blade Show, maybe not the year before, I am not sure. Before his drawing his table was way in the back 40 of the show….I think he sold all his knives but he was not as well known as he is today. At one show he sold all his knives before they hit the table. A customer had driven a long way to buy a knife and was very disappointed that all were sold before the show was even started…so that is why the drawing was started. My first drawing there were something like 25 to 35 cards. I think my name was drawn twice that first year. Reese did not have a drawing then. He didn’t start until certain people(me) snagged some killer knives on the way down. Seems some people didn’t think that was fair.

This little freebie in D-2 from Reese was made and carried by him to see how Micarta would hold up without stainless liners. I was at a show and one morning and he just handed it to me and asked me to field test it…..I did It's amazing how well the miacrta holds up. I have seen a few 3” Wharncliffe Trappers in pearl, just like the Gents, but two blades and very small, but not one in the peanut frame. I am not surprised about him saying that…I think he likes making larger knives...but ya never know.

Personally a Gents knife (to me) is just a slim line knife that is more on the delicate side…something I should be carrying to church right about now. SwayBack’s come in all sizes. 2 1/2" 3 1/8" 3 1/2" & 3 5/8", Single & 2 Blades. I have collected pics of a few over the past years if you would like to see.

For instance, when a knife has 2 blades and they pivot on the same end it's called a "jack knife". But there are specialized jack knives like trappers, electricians, etc. Still, they are jack knives. Just a little confusing when you are trying to learn stuff So, what the heck do you call a knife that was a jack knife with 2 blades and you take away a blade? It's not really a jack knife any more. I think that is why Tony calls a "swayback jack pattern" with a single blade a gents knife. That's the way I see it but what the hell do I know. _________________________ KerryNIFE HamptonEAD

I think the best all time “everyday carry knife” is a 3 1/2” wharncliffe trapper...and I back this up with having had one in my pocket for maybe the last 10 years...but I must be honest with you all...I have been thinking about the definition of a Gent’s Knife off and on today......to me there is only one ultimate “gent’s knife”....of course not all would agree with me....but the coolest small... three inch knife to me is a five blade stockman in remington bone...killer pimple stage would be killer too...I thought at one time ivory would be right up there...but I think the remington bone with a baby federal shield has what it takes. Truly a Gentlemen’s Knife. If you have not seen one of these in person you have no idea of what I am talking about. All those blades crammed into that small little frame is crazy. If you like “lots going on” in a small package then you need to see one of these....in person and have it in your hand ....its has to be one of the coolest Bose knives out there...Just my two cents.

I agree about the trapper,too.It is really kinda hard to beat that.I'm carrying a T Bose WT shadow for edc /work,and rotating a Reese WT with bone,on lighter duty days,lately moreso. But you know us knifenuts,no matter how perfect the pattern,we're always looking around the corner. The Bose knives are all truly fantastic,this is a great Forum, -Vince

To summarize it a great deal, I had to travel to the Atlanta show in 2001, to pick it up. Professor Tony says: You want it, you come get it in Atlanta. And meself goes gets it in Atlanta. So there I am in Atlanta, not overly interested in knives other than the ones from Wilfred, I walk around and around like everyone else does at the show, and end up at the table of this very nice man who is engraving knives. Stupid, ignorant me gets to watching the guy work, and we get to talking and I end up giving him the knife for engraving the bolsters. The engraving is fair, I guess, and it brings back great memories, but I love my Wilfred knives just the way they come from the bench. Anyways, thanks for reading. It's got Micarta scales. I had it in my pocket for years. Until recently, really, as now I carry the single blade trapper everywhere. I won't elaborate on the "everywhere".

I was given a Micarta 2 blade WT along time ago in a different Galaxy...I carried it for a year or two. I noticed that the Micarta actually got a polished look to it..... rubbing on keys and coins and such...very cool look to it. So where you been carring that?....please elaborate

I've used it for anything and everything including skinning pecari (a small tropical boar like pig), deer, ducks... It's the first knife that Mr. Bose made for me. I had asked an old friend, Bill Keeton, to make a folding knife for me. Bill makes wonderful fixed blade knives and he's made a few for me, all hunting knives. Folders are not Bill's specialty so, being the good friend he is he told me to contact his friend Tony Bose. I wanted a do it all little knife to keep in my pocket. Before then, I only had fixed blade knives which I used for hunting, and the odd Buck folder. Thus, I ordered Micarta scales. Of course, now I wish I had ordered stag scales for that baby. Anyhow, that little knife is a champ and I wouldn't get rid of it for half of Fort Knox.
