I have often said: "Buy the knife...not the story". With that being said, I know there are a lot of them (knife stories) out there. I was speaking to Jim Gates today about a couple of knives that had "stories". It occured to me that this would make a great thread!
So....How about it? Do you have a particular Randall knife (and story) that you would like to share with us? I know the forum folks would love to hear it, especially with some photos! Let's hear from ya'!!
Thanks, Capt. Chris
PS: I've got a double boatload of 'em, but I'll let ya'll have first shot!...CCS

Well, I guess I need to add a few stories of mine.

The first is "Backdoor Blades". It is a mighty temptation when working in a shop where the knives are worth hundreds of dollars to resist taking just one blade out the "back door" and adding your handle to it. Not too many finished blades are taken I imagine because the theft is more obvious.

One of Rick Bowles dealer special blades walked out the back door and wound up handled in a unique fashion with a scalloped collar not offered and no thumb notches. It also lacks Rick's serial number. It is still a nice knife but not a "real" Randall.

Here are photos of it.

Jim

That's more like it...and if I know Jim Gates he's got a few more stories to tell. I always heard these knives referred to as: "Lunchbox Specials". Thanks for "tellin' the tale" Jim.
Best, Capt. Chris

Another story - or how not to sell a knife. I recently purchased a knife described as follows:

Engraved Model 7 "Fisherman - Hunter" by Randall

Product Details:

Blade size: 5"
Blade material: High Carbon Tool Steel
Handle: Stag
Bolsters: Nickel Silver Hilt
Overall: 9 3/4"
Sheath: Sullivan's Leather Sheath

Sounds OK but the knife has a Stainless Steel blade, Ironwood Burl handle and a custom Beaver Tail sheath. They just mentioned the engraving, without describing the gold leaf, and no details or mention at all in the main description.

You really have to look at the photos and not just the description. Below is a photo of the knife in question.

Great looking knife, do you know who did the engraving?

Jim,
That is a beautiful Model 7. Who did the engraving? Not really in the business of buying knives back but.... if it was offered??? Nice find!

Best Wishes,

Jason Randall

I would like to know the engraver too. I suspect it may be Joe Mason as it resembles his work.
