Great knife. Congratulations on keeping it, in what looks like, pristine condition.

Thanks Rick and Rod. The handle is near perfect, but the blade has a few honest scratches that remind me of my childhood. Amazingly, the blade still locks up tight in all directions. kalervo, Buck did a limited run on 112's with stag. They are commonly offered on eBay. Here's one from a completed auction...

Tom, Those Bucks ... great knives for a lot of us ... my first good "sheath" knife was a Buck Pathfinder ... Son #2 now has it! Your 112 is terrific! Tony

Thanks Tony. I love Buck Knives. To me, they are THE American production knife like Randall is THE American handmade knife. Since you mentioned the Pathfinder, give me a minute, then go to the Fixed Blade Photo Gallery.

When I focussed on US made folding knives in the late 1970's the 112 Ranger was my first love. But in those times they were nearly impossible to get in Germany. A sled-dog musher friend from Switzerland, who had lived in Alaska for some years, did import my first Bucks directly from a knife shop in Anchorage. BTW I also had noticed a Colt Barry Wood, which my Swiss friend always carried in the pocket of his parka, reminding him on his Alaska times, where a locking folder without spring would be better in harsh and cold weather conditions. And of course I have that knife too in my actual collection. Let me show You my two first edition 112s from 1969, brass spring holder and black Micarta scales. The integral bolsters and liners are of cast brass, which You can see on the inclusions, even factory polished. One has been refinished by Leroy Reemer, who had worked at the Buck Custom Shop in the 1980's, the other one is original. And I love that original black leather pouch with lots of character. I would be curious to know, what stories those two beauties could tell. Thanks for looking, Uli

Very nice, Uli. I have always preferred the 112 over the 110. I like the overall size and shape of the front bolster better. I also like the clean look of just two small brass pins in the handle and no nail notch in the blade. Two features that were eventually changed.
Thanks for posting the photos!

Although very similar, my very first hunting knife was a Schrade Uncle Henry LB7 with Rosewood scales that I still own today. Years later I bought a Buck 110 at a yard sale which I handed down to my very best friend. He still carries this knife today. They were all quality construction and good steel. They sharpened to a razor's edge. I never did own a 112, maybe someday huh?

Very nice, Peter! I like the clean look of no nail notch. According to this Buck 112 Data Sheet, your knife is a Category III, Version 4 and was made in the late 70s.

Version 2. Same as above except now a stainless spring holder.
Category II, Stamped BUCK, 112, U.S.A. 1972
Version 1. Left hand stamp, stainless spring holder, black micarta inlays, two brass inlay rivets and stainless rocker rivet.
Version 2. Same as above except inlays are Segua wood.
Version 3. Same as above except inlays are Macasar Ebony wood.
Category III, Stamped BUCK, *112*, U.S.A. 1974 to 1980.
Version 1. Left hand stamp, stainless spring holder, Macasar Ebony inlays, two brass inlay rivets and stainless rocker rivet.
Version 2. Same as above except four brass inlay rivets.
Version 3. Same as above except three brass inlay rivets.
Version 4. Same as above except the brass inlay rivets are now approximately 1/8 in diameter.
Category IV, Stamped BUCK, *112**, U.S.A. 1980 to 1981.
Version 1. Left hand stamp, stainless spring holder, Macasar Ebony inlays, three 1/8 brass inlay rivets and stainless rocker rivet.
Version 2. Same as above except nail notch added.
Version 3. Same as above except hand radiused handle edges. Handles have hand radiused edges. No radius in thumb depression area. Finger grooved model introduced.
Category V, Stamped BUCK **112**, U.S.A. 1981 ? to 1986.

Thanks Tony and Guido. It is a great sheath. Typically, you don't see this quality from a production knife company.

Really nice looking sheath, Tom, to put what looks like a treasured & maybe used a little Buck. The company website looks like they want to do quality work, too.

The company website looks like they want to do quality work, too. Duke, I really like Carl's sheaths. The design and tooling is usually very tasteful and not over done. Here's one that the buyer paired up with a Hattori copy of a RMK 5-5. It got me thinking...

That's a beauty, Peter. From its condition, I can tell it was special to you. Looks like the sheath did a good job protecting it.
Those 3 dot 112s are hard to pinpoint the steel type. Could be 440C or 425M. 1980/81 was the time frame that Buck made the switch.

Great looking knife. Out of interest, did you use any conditioner on the case throughout the years?

Not having much knowledge on Buck knives, what is the difference between a 110 and a 112? Is the 112 just a smaller version of the 110?
