I know this has been discussed, but I couldn't find it with a search.

What is the long tie down for that runs through the top two holes at the top of the sheath? I know the thong below it ties off the handle, but I don't understand how the top thong is used.

I have asked this before with no avail. I think it is for strapping to your arm or leg or maybe pack strap etc.

I have never found a good use for it so I have always removed it as well as the other top tie. They are easy to put back on if needed

Thanks Ben. Can't imagine strapping a 14 or 18 to your arm or leg, but who knows. Strapping it to a pack makes more sense. I suppose it's better to have and not need, than to need and not have.

IMO Randall should have sullivans make a molle compatable model C sheath. A thick leather strap and a snap would do it.

Seems many soldiers have a hard time affixing the stock sheath to the gear as it is pretty much impossible

I heard they go around the handle for extra security which makes the sheath jump qualified. As when you jump out of an airplane with a parachute. The loops add an extra measure of security to keep the knife from slipping out of the sheath in case you accidentally unsnap the keeper snap while in the air. I could be wrong but this is what I've been told.

Thanks Dan. I remember reading that explanation too and it makes sense on the lower tie down, but the upper tie down goes through the back and is quite long. That's probably what it's for, but then again, I thought I knew how to tie the wrist thong all these years until the Captain came along and showed us the Randall way. blush

I have jumped 346 times, not very many compared to a Golden Knight or Navy Seal though.

Really bad to have your knife come out of the sheath when the parachute deploys.

1) You don't have your expensive Randall Knife anymore

2) Your Randall knife might "meet up" with one of your buddies on the way down.

Strapped and Tied Down means safe journey when in the air.
