Been cleaning up some of The Captain's "STASH" and have to share this one with ya'. When Duke & I first staring screwing around with Musk Ox we had to learn (in my case: The HARD WAY) about how to treat, cut, stabilize, etc. these horns. I was at the AGCA show in Birmingham (at the time) and it was winter time. I came in on Saturday morning to uncover my tables and find a splendid Model #11-4 1/2"...in Musk Ox, drawn up from both ends, to the point that you could see the tang of the knife, open at both ends! The club had turned off the heat overnight and the cold temperature drew that handle up like a prune!
Hard lesson learned, I can tell you, but it forced me to make other decisions, regarding Musk Ox. Nowadays, I practice a lot of patience before sending a piece into the Randall shop for handling. This example below is the most extreme variation of that practice.
In my opinion, the finest example of Musk Ox on a knife handle...certainly that I have ever seen. I waited 10 years before sending it in!
Hope you like it...
Stay Sharp, Capt. Chris

with ya on that Capt!!
This is my 4" #2 with Doug's silver...my stomach constricted almost to the point of vomit when I noticed a slight "gap" in the spacer...it's remained the same since then...the thickness of a business card....I still get sick looking at it....I've got another piece(speaking of 10 years), and I believe it's probably o.k. now....maybe...

Rocky, I learned a trick from Duke McCaa. He has a guy that can fix cracks in natural material better than anyone I have seen.

He fills the gap with pigmented epoxy, in this case black, which makes the last spacer look thicker, but fills the gap. I have done a couple and it's a big improvement over the gap.
